“Edo Famous Dengeki Juroku Prince Fox Fire” by Hirokage Utagawa. 19th century
A fascinating 19th-century vertical woodblock print by Utagawa Hirokage, from his celebrated satirical series Comical Views of Famous Places in Edo, is featured in Untitled-10.jpg. The artwork captures a whimsical, supernatural narrative set in the rural landscape near Ōji Inari Shrine under a dark, moody night sky executed with a deep indigo bokashi gradation. In the foreground, a troop of anthropomorphic foxes (kitsune) is depicted engaging in a lively, carnivalesque parade that playfully parodies human processions. On the left, two foxes walk upright while carrying large, heavy pumpkins or gourds suspended from a shoulder pole, while a central fox masterfully balances an extraordinarily tall, slender bamboo pole topped with a tiny, dancing figure high in the air. To the right, another group of foxes carries a bewildered human traveler resting inside a woven basket litter (kago), perfectly showcasing Hirokage’s signature blending of Edo folklore with comic strip-style humor.

The background unfolds across an expansive green valley where the legendary foxfires (kitsunebi) flicker as small, floating red and orange embers among dozens of distant fox silhouettes gathered in the fields. A rustic thatched-roof farmhouse stands nestled near a grove of tall, stylized trees, while the long, vermilion-painted wall of a shrine compound breaks up the landscape on the left. In the upper right corner, a distinctive red title cartouche shaped like an open fan or stylized crescent moon frames the series text, balanced by the artist's signature cartouche in the lower left register.
