If it's on an app, you can use hybrid (i.e. the qr code) and have whatever app you want on the other side 🤔 If somehow usb was required yeah I can see that. Android used to support pretending to be a security key over USB but we got rid of that capability.

You can just build a software authenticator that pretends to be a USB one to the site. That and forcing attachment = undefined on .create() calls would be enough I think. As long as the site isn't verifying attestation I don't see how that wouldn't work.

Idea: measure how many chromium commits pass the programming Bechdel test. A commit passes if at least two engineers involved are women between the author and reviewers, and the reviewers aren't just rubber stamping the CL.

The person at Apple who added the stupid "app wants to see nearby devices" prompt to a set of undocumented, random, synchronous APIs.

They could if they opened a browser instead, like battle net. No idea why they went with that design.

If your passkey is on 1password, the passkey should hopefully be presented in the autofill menu for your username which should save a couple clicks. The extension can't do touch id, but the native app may be able to. I don't use 1pw myself though -- sorry.

Usually all you have to do is press the "sign in with a passkey" button or the autofill entry, then touch id. Is chrome presenting more steps than that? Do you have a password manager installed?

Your biometrics don't go to the website. It'd be pretty shit if that's how they worked! You also don't have to use biometrics with passkeys if you don't want to. I wish this was more obvious...

Visit chrome settings, autofill services. You should be able to choose Bit Warden there I believe. For the yubikey, NFC is known to be buggy, sorry. Try connecting it to your phone via USB.

I'm sitting at a restaurant alone, next table is a French, Chinese, and an Indian guy discussing which cuisine is better. Incredible unintentional entertainment.

But yes, batch attestation isn't very useful. I'd recommended sites to not bother asking for it.

Enterprise attestation is useful when companies vend security keys to their employees to make sure they use the hardware the company provided. Batch attestation is... a compromise. You could consider keys that aren't fido certified to some level less safe? A bank can restrict auth to keys it ships?

Good explainer from @leedrutman.bsky.social on why "ban gerrymandering" within the context of single-member districts is deceptively oversimplified. There is no such thing as any one objectively right measure of non-gerrymandered fairness, and they all have predictable partisan biases.

Why you can’t just ban gerrymandering
Fair maps require a definition of fair. There isn't one. There are infinite ones.

Last year, miHoYo copied my puzzle game Ouros in Zenless Zone Zero. Because they are a recognized, billion-dollar studio and my game isn't well known, some people are now assuming that their version is the original, and mine is the clone. I hope this video clears that up.

Generally speaking, sites don't want their users to get hacked. Passkeys can't be reused, can't be forgotten, and resist phishing. They're also easy to use, especially if you have biometrics.

If you're worried about someone stealing your device, you can always have a strong lockscreen password. It's more or less the same threat model as using a password manager.

It's mostly due to irresponsible usage by people to extrude code, documents, and bug reports that look passable. Any gains I may have with personal usage are dwarfed by the time it takes me to process other people's slop.

By choosing to write the handmaid's tale, Margaret Atwood is getting readers to think about a world where women don't have rights. It doesn't really matter if she's critical of it, just by getting coverage, it becomes "an issue worthy of debate."

Thank you! There are so many vocal people out there screaming "if it's not designed around my preferences, it's shit". People I certainly I wouldn't want on my engineering team. Of course they're not perfect for every single scenario and there's stuff we could (and we are) improving.

The more nerds (I identify as a nerd!) complain about passkeys, the more I’m confident in their success. Just read a comment objecting to a passkey being automatically created for them. “Dark pattern!!1!1 Should be optional!!” No regular user wants to think about auth.
