“The mystification of whiteness as culture was formed through the opposition of “primitive” societies to a “modern” one... but just speaking of internalisation of these negative images, or reenactments seems quite simplistic and denies the agency of the colonised." southoftherapy.com/unlivable-so...

This is why this presentation focuses on what I understand by the relational and deep embodied impact of whiteness on our work. It will be an invitation for each of us to recognise these dynamics in us and around us, and to begin dismantling them. 3/

Decades of research by incredible thinkers underpin this. There are many clever ways to understand whiteness and how it impacts therapy. The more I do this work the more I understand that this has to cease being an intellectual exercise & become an open invitation for deep embodied emotional work.2/

Do you need a space that will help you understand yourself and your experiences? Would you benefit from professional support to navigate the complex emotions that emerge in this process? Therapy from an anti-oppressive perspective might be for you. More info through the link in bio.

Anti-oppressive support will offer language by naming what might be happening, but it will always be a suggestion rather than an explanation. Further exploration to see if it fits the person’s experience is always part of this process. Finding OUR OWN way of understanding ourselves is the focus.

Lucia Sarmiento Verano @sarmientoverano.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
However, during the meaning-making process, we might be tempted to internalise someone else’s perspective again. Therapeutic language & discourse can be used to interpret & explain some of what we experience. It can also take over our understanding without considering our context.
100
Lucia Sarmiento Verano @sarmientoverano.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
The process of finding language may be painful, especially if experiences of trauma, discrimination or silencing are involved. These feelings can be held with the clarity we gain by making meaning of our stories. We can develop self and social awareness, compassion and a plan for future action.

Lucia Sarmiento Verano @sarmientoverano.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Part of the liberation process is examining one’s experience in a way that helps us make meaning. This includes finding language to understand ourselves and what we face when we navigate society. We can then decide where and how we want to communicate our experiences.

Lucia Sarmiento Verano @sarmientoverano.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Language & Epistemic Injustice. The inequality in accessing language or discourses that help us make meaning, understand & communicate our experiences. Certain experiences are often invisibilised. Marginalised communities are excluded from spaces where discourse is produced.

Harm in therapy is not directly caused by Power difference in the room... it is caused by the disavowal of that Power. We need to do away with this illusion that we can equalise power in the room so we can learn to take responsibility for what we do and how we relate without defensiveness.

Entered an existencial crisis over my PhD after a tricky couple of supervisions. A menty B as gen Z would say. Mr. Man listened to the detailed explanation of my research as if he weren't bored out of his mind & then said "why are you crying over a thesis nobody will read anyway?" I calmed down.
