The Leafcutter bees REALLY liked the Dogwood this year! I don't think I've ever seen so many circles taken out of a single leaf before!

It was amazing. Such a cool place, and only half an hour away from home!

I'm struggling to find the words - this is for Joe Harkness. I took this photo of the NQ Growboxes Dunnock in 2019, this little bird (and all the bees) helped get me through some tough times, I could relate to Bird Therapy so much when it was published that year. Rest well Joe.

This is very possible as I haven't ever seen them arranged quite like this before 😂

The most picturesque collection of Stump Puffballs I have ever seen - Autumn is coming!

He'd brought up several generations of chicks and would have been at least 13 now - which is a good age for a wild Kestral, though as he hasn't been seen since the Summer it seems his watch is probably over. Brockholes just won't be the same without him.

He was INCREDIBLY used to people, this photo was taken during the pandemic when we used to visit at dawn. When we arrived Kevin would generally be waiting around the car park area, and then follow us as we walked. I think he couldn't work out why it was suddenly so quiet.

Kevin 💔 This is Kevin, the resident male Kestral at Brockholes NR. I encountered him on my first visit to the reserve back in 2014 when he flew over my car as I arrived, and I'd normally spot him somewhere around on every subsequent visit.

First walk of Autumn in Rivington. It's years since I've been around here - last time was chasing the waterfalls around Tiger's Clough - and just realizing I've barely scratched the surface of how big an area it is. Looking forward to exploring more.

The smallest bee we get in the garden, the Common Yellow-Faced bee. Only around for a few short weeks each year, I feel lucky to have them as this is the bee that got me into macro photography (saw one on the cover of a book and really wanted to see & photograph them one day). #bees

I love that! It's getting to the point of the year where our bee friends are starting to go, it feels like it's quicker each year 😭

Are these bristletails? My friend would like to know what species if anyone has any idea. They are in Orkney. #Invertebrates # bristletails

Very true! We have a plant pot full of this slate in a shady corner of the garden waiting to be used (we have to use it as plant pot toppers otherwise the squirrels dig everything up), and he was in there!

Found this awesome Marmalade Hoverfly larvae a few weeks back, which cunningly mimics bird poo to remain unseen on leaves which meant I almost missed it at first. Second pic shows a wider view.

Finally cleared the backlog of photo editing! It's been a great year for hoverflies in the garden (possibly connected to the fact that it's also been a great year for aphids, their major food source) 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have just checked Bluesky for the first time in ages (work busy plus Probate to sort) - I'm sure the wasp was just curious, but how are they doing now. Lucky you, no Bombus nests around the house/garden this year :(

All winter I look for slime moulds in the garden without success. Allllllllll winter. And then what do I find in one of the older bee houses today.... 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's been a weird old year for the bees. The swings in temperature haven't phased the Red Mason bees at all, & there are still Spring flying mining bees around. At the same time, the other species feel late to arrive in the garden, so I was very happy to find this Orange Vented Mason bee #bees

They are! And this year there are millions* (well not quite, but an awful lot) of them. Have put extra houses out around the garden and every one is being used!

This year's male Red Mason bees didn't get the memo that they are a 'solitary' species, and decided to roost en masse in the same tubes each night - leading to an incredible scrum at the entrance each morning when everyone decided to get up at the same time 🙄 #bees #solitarybees

We lost our two elderly boys over the past couple of years - Cat Meds was such a massive part of our routine that it took so long to adjust to not having to do it.

Ooh maybe some hollow stems bundled together would work for them? Oooh we have those too - they tend to be called Plasterer Bees here :) They turn up in the garden from time to time but only to forage!

Lucky - hopefully that will be them established this year then :) I'm looking forward to them reaching us! Looks like there's one isolated record in Cheshire, which is the nearest to me so far!
