Today I had the thought, "Acting is finding the simplicity in complexity and the complexity in simplicity." Then I wondered if the same could be said for joy. And maybe that's where the magic is. #Thoughts #Acting #Words #Magic

I wrote about the weaponization of free speech last summer. Didn't know what to do with it, so it’s sitting in a Google Doc lol… shorturl.at/F1Pm2 Meanwhile, @mollyjongfast.bsky.social at @vanityfair.com just published a piece on how Trumpworld is waging a war on words. Worth a read. ⬇️
When Free Speech Is Weaponized: Updating Rhetoric for the Digital Age

I was recently scrolling through Facebook when I saw the comment,
“Even when we vehemently disagree with others views, I don’t think censorship is the answer. Freedom of speech is a basic tenet of a democratic society. Who gets to decide what should be censored? It’s so problematic to start cancelling people. Just look at history for examples.”
What started as a quick reply to this comment quickly evolved into a deeper reflection on the complexities of free speech in the digital age. Yes, free speech has long been heralded as a cornerstone of democratic society, essential for the flourishing of public discourse and the pursuit of truth. Rooted in the classical rhetoric of Aristotle, free speech is intended to empower individuals, foster critical debate, and uphold democratic values. However, the contemporary digital landscape has increasingly seen this ideal weaponized—used not to enlighten but to mislead, polarize, and manipulate.
This article explores how Aristotle’s classical framework of rhetoric, which once guided ethical and effective communication, must be updated to address the challenges posed by the weaponization of free speech in today’s hyper-connected world.

Loved this book! I originally couldn’t get through the first chapter and left it on a work bookshelf. Was the first book I’d given up on. The same day someone randomly asked if I’d read it and told me I needed to try again. So happy I did!! This review on the back describes it perfectly.

Mornings at Black Water by Mary Oliver

For years, every morning, I drank from Blackwater Pond.
It was flavored with oak leaves and also, no doubt, the feet of ducks.
And always it assuaged me
from the dry bowl of the very far past.
What I want to say is that the past is the past,
and the present is what your life is, and you are capable
of choosing what that will be, darling citizen.
So come to the pond, or the river of your imagination, or the harbor of your longing,
and put your lips to the world.
And live your life.

Facts. Elon Musk could become the world’s first trillionaire by 2027. That means he could spend approximately $54.74 million per day for 50 years and still have at least $1 billion left. People thinking they are going to become rich like him are delusional.
People don't have a strong intuitive sense of how much bigger 1 billion is than 1 million.
1 million seconds is about
11 days. 1 billion seconds is about 31.5 years. 1 trillion seconds is over
31,709 years.

In the holiday chaos, what makes a message worth opening? (1/3) It’s not scarcity tactics or flashy subject lines. It’s purpose. It’s connection. It’s the kind of story that makes someone pause in the chaos and think, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴. #Branding is not just for corporations and products.
‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through my phone,
Not a message was stirring, just an inbox overgrown.

The children were dreaming of gifts by the tree,
While spam emails promised, “Buy two, get three!”

And I in my PJs, with coffee in hand,
Clicked “Mark as Spam” on a dozen brands.

Social impact doesn’t have to be stuffy (1/2). I hid a mini-game on the Recess Labs site featuring Buster the Balloon Dog. 🎈🐾 It’s fun, yes. But it’s also strategic: gamified experiences help people explore your brand and leave with a smile. Because the best brands? People want to play with them.

7/ Sometimes, a single, well-delivered message is all you need to make an impression. I had three words, but they stood out because I gave them everything I had—heart, sincerity, and intention. Even if all you’ve got is three words, make them count. That’s how you become memorable.

Great branding isn’t just about visuals or messaging; it’s about the human connections that bring it to life. (1/3) Empathy and leadership are what truly shape how organizations resonate with their audience, teams, and stakeholders.
