Professor, Climate Science |TEDx speaker | Co-host Totally Cooke...

To put it as bluntly as I can, this is serious shit.

If we don't have an Australian climate model, we are shooting ourselves in the foot when it comes to adapting to climate change.

It's like accessing the internet on a dial up modem - we will be using old technology, and I can assure you, we WILL be flying blind.
Looking 1000 years into the future in a post net zero world? We have the ACCESS climate model to thank for that.

Understanding our future weather to harness renewable energy? We will need the ACCESS climate model for that.

Determining the survivability of Australian people and our native wildlife during future heatwaves? We MUST have the ACCESS climate model for that.

The future is literally in our hands.

Let's do better.

I will think about this more, I don't have a robust answer for you now (maybe ever) but I will cogitate on this for some time.

you are right - but, it is something that every day people can do, to reduce risks themselves - gives them some control and autonomy over the situation.

Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick @sarahinscience.bsky.social · 14/05/2026
honestly though I don't think that any one body is responsible. it must be collaborative & transdicsiplinary, which is unfortunately why we're not doing well at this (yet)

you have some incredibly interesting points, and can I just say, I agree with **ALL** of them.

This is a very good question we are grappling with. the impending CSIRO cuts will significantly reduce core knowledge + capacity. Without this, it remains to be seen how current demands + uses can be sustained. We are scratching our heads on what to do. If you can, make noise + campaign.

so I haven't posted here in AGES, but thought I'd sure my recent TEDx talk. Would do it again in a heart beat! It's on why net zero is no longer enough, and that adaption is imperative. Massive shout-out to the ACCESS climate model, which is under grave threat. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXJL...

It really is. I also feel really guilty that I get to escape while my family is left to deal with the heat Im going overseas to a meeting on climate & Health - it could not be more ironic.

Im travelling overseas today to attend a climate change & Health expert meeting- irony is not lost on me. But I've stressed to my husband the importance of staying safe. And if (God forbid) fires ignite, get out early.

Indeed. Heatwaves of this length aren't common in Australia (yet), usually <=5 days. We aren't in el nino, or had a +ve IOD in spring. So its severity is worrying. Mercifully, Canberra does have lower nighttime temps - one of the reasons we moved from Western Sydney.

Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick @sarahinscience.bsky.social · 24/01/2026
Yeah......this ain't a great forecast. Word on the street it will rival the heatwaves of 2009 and 1939. Some inland parts of Australia will get into the high 40s. The last i checked, some models were Predicting low 50s in some inland places. Im really nervous about this one. #heatwave #Australia

I've made the decision not to go while trump is in power. Im actually not confident I'd be let in anyway...I've said a few things on the public record he would not like. Don't like the idea of being detained, simply for saying how it is.

It's 28 degrees at 8.30am in #Canberra. My girls are making the most of outside time while they can. A north-westerly is getting stronger -not good for fire weather. Fingers crossed we see this thru unscathed. Thinking of everyone affected by the #Victorianfires.

Hard agree. Given how disparate the funding is between fire agencies and defence, they should have paid.

Current conditions in #Canberra, sun set roughly and hour ago We are 600m above sea level - would be roughly 6deg hotter if we had no elevation.

Oh my! That was 9 years ago - Sydney had its hottest summer that year (since beaten ). I watched it now with my youngest on my lap and it brought tears. My concerns have amplified since. My family has grown but we're now in Canberra & doing as much as possible to reduce carbon footprint & adapt.

the @australia.theguardian.com published an oped by me today. This heatwave is bad. The bushfires it is enabling are also bad. Climate scientists & meteorologists are incredibly concerned about the next 48 hours. And this is just a taste of what's to come. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

View from my front yard in #CANBERRA this afternoon. The fire is 300km away, in Victoria. Much of Australia is currently in a heatwave, in some places the hottest temps for >15 years. Cool change forcasted in south-east from tomorrow onwards, but this is a recipe for disaster for firefighting

It would be quite straightforward to do, if the total emissions are known. We're working on a webpage that can basically do this, based on our paper + more impacts included. Will be launched sometime in the new year - watch this space

Hi Kirsty, happy for you to reach out via standard work email. but in a nut shell, if we can convert CH4 into CO2 equiv (which can be done) then we have a solid shot. we are also working on a freely available online tool & other impacts too

here's an article we wrote for The Conversation: theconversation.com/for-the-firs...
theconversation.com
For the first time, we linked a new fossil fuel project to hundreds of deaths. Here’s the impact of Woodside’s Scarborough gas project
The results challenge claims that the climate risks posed by an individual fossil fuel project are negligible or cannot be quantified.

For so long, fossil fuel projects have said their contribution to climate change is "negligible". Turns out that's wrong. Our research in NPJ Climate Action proves it. Every tonne of CO2 matters. @21stcenturyweather.bsky.social @minderoo.bsky.social #climatechange www.nature.com/articles/s44...
