#FilmHistory On this day, 2003, Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation was released in the US. One of cinema’s great unanswered moments: Bill Murray whispers something we never hear, Scarlett Johansson smiles through tears & “Just Like Honey” by The Jesus & Mary Chain carries the film into the credits.

Love being sat next to a man at the cinema who was quite literally the physical embodiment of Resident Evil (he had a cold)

There’s this great yakitori place in Koenji, I’ll get the map pin and send you it. Also backstreets of Nakano Broadway there’s this great tempura place. The best tempura place is in Koenji and always has a mad line (not an influencer line, a Japanese-know-best line) Jasper can recommend ramens 🍜

At the Emmys last night, host Mariska Hargitay paid tribute to GHOULIES, which marked her film debut. Yes, the Emmys even played a clip from Ghoulies. "Jamie Lee Curtis is not the only scream queen around here," Hargitay said on stage last night. WHAT A MOMENT!

The incredible people at @imprintfilms.bsky.social took a risk with this set because some early J-Horror titles were only available at the time in SD, but they’ve done an amazing job bringing these back to life. Shout out to Josh Hibberd for trusting my ideas for this! “A centrepiece documentary”!!

I’m so focussed on getting a UK and US release for the origins, but I’ll be interested to see who’s open to Aftermath when this set sells through, which it will!

Wow! Nice! Good skill to have. 👍🏻 I didn’t know you were such a big fan of the film, if we get it released in another territory I’ll hyu for an essay or something ! I did the essay and the commentary for this one because I’m greedy!

I’ve been pushing for a release of Jaganrei: Psychic Vision for a couple of years now, so much so that I am the person who holds / owns the HD upscale file and not AYA Pro, because I paid to get it done myself. Also shout out to @midnightmes.bsky.social who made the all new subtitles!

Sarah Appleton @sarahappleton.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

Thank you! That was the idea, like why show all these titles and then people can’t get hold of them to see them? We couldn’t get everything we wanted, but to have Jaganrei and Scary True Stories is a great start!

👻 @imprintfilms.bsky.social are releasing this box set curated by me and featuring the documentary THE J-HORROR VIRUS I made with @jaspersharp.bsky.social back in 2023. It also features an essay by me on Jaganrei: Psychic Vision and its collision at the origins of j-horror and found footage!

Just to weigh in on the “sole female director at Venice” conversation… many women, like me, have written fiction feature films that have been considered good enough for great producers to onboard. Then they can’t get the funding because financiers don’t understand women’s perspective or “gaze”.
