B'alith was determined that today was going to be the day he would manage to get out of bed entirely under his own power.

All things considered, he was recovering fantastically well for someone who had died—twice, apparently, according to the chirurgeons' reports—not terribly long ago. His more superficial injuries had been swept away under the force of powerful healing magic that some of the star's best and brightest had poured into him, and he was beginning to have some days where he was awake almost as much as he was asleep. He still couldn't feed or dress himself, let alone attempt something as complex as walking to the bathroom and using it unassisted, but the fact that he was alive and well enough to complain about it was nothing shy of a miracle.

He was growing so very, very tired of miracles.

Before she was Deryk, she was Oschon, and before that she could no longer recall who or what she had been. She had been the Wanderer for so long she had simply forgotten how to be anything else.

Her travels across the star had not really counted as true wandering for a very long time. To wander carried with it some degree of purpose, even if she did not have a specific destination she was trying to reach. It would have been more accurate to say that for the last however many decades she had merely drifted, pulled along by the currents of fate and by her simple inability to resist it. The people of the star venerated him as Oschon the Wanderer, and so he continued to put one foot in front of the other as long as their prayers continued to reach him.

The elder Miqo'te had claimed a knack for thaumaturgy, a proclamation utterly at odds with B'alith's understanding of the Boar tribe's current Nunh as a man more skilled with his body than his mind. B'jinh Nunh was hardly a fool—he would not hold the position he did if he lacked the necessary acuity with numbers which made him such a shrewd negotiator—but B'alith had a difficult time imagining those heavily-muscled arms and scarred hands performing the more delicate gestures he assumed were required of mages. One way or another, he would find out soon, and he did not want to wait a single moment longer.

Intimacy of this sort had never come easily to him. Zhai’a had slowly started to become more physically affectionate as they became more entangled in each other’s lives—would he want to be held? Woken with gentle touches or kisses trailed across his skin, as he had done a time or two when it was his Seeker lover stirring to wakefulness? Would he be embarrassed or angry at having been caught in such a vulnerable state?

B’alith was not sure his heart could bear it if that last thought—fear, really—proved to be true, but he’d let his own past heartbreaks hold him back from fully giving himself to someone for too long. He owed it to himself, and to Zhai’a, to be brave again.

A severe, clever mouth finds the curve of his neck as the now-familiar brush of his lover's magic ripples against his own.

It is here at the edge of yesterday and tomorrow where they find themselves meeting, moon beckoning to sun, both of them soft-edged and sleepy as they curl into each other. Morning birdsong is joined by low voices murmuring inconsequential things to each other; on some occasions quiet conversation turns to breathless gasps and cries of pleasure, a joining of the flesh which leaves them loose-limbed and spent with salt drying on flushed skin, but just as often they are content to simply be. Theirs is a peace that has been hard won, and they have learned to cherish the time together they have been granted.

There were few things in all the star Bram loathed more than speaking of his father. He'd kept the secret from Hien longer than any other, and treated his existence with the same disdain one might feel for the lowest criminals. His hatred was long and sustained. Choosing to help him in spite of all that couldn't have been easy.

Hien lifted his head so that he might more easily meet his eyes, taking one of Bram’s gloved hands in his own. “Feign peace for the others as much as you like. I understand well the toll of leadership. But I beg you: be honest with me.”

Entirely new paths of understanding had suddenly opened up to him. His father had taught him the basics, and he had taken to it well enough, but this new approach to what he had already learned came to him as effortlessly as breathing. The incantations and formulae distilled the frighteningly chaotic snarl of raw, wild aether into something he could grasp, a focus to channel his will through, and he threw himself into the comforting and predictable discipline of it with an intensity that impressed his teachers and alienated his peers. It was not the path he had wished for himself, it was true, but it challenged him and honed his mind. It made him feel alive in a way nothing else ever had.

As hard as leaving home had been, in B'alith's opinion, being accepted into the Thaumaturges' Guild was one of the best things that had ever happened to him.

His mother had received the news with joy, telling him he should be proud of the gift he had been blessed with—there was a real possibility that with hard work and a little luck, he could become the first Keeper of the Moon in Gridania's history to be invested as a Hearer—but when the Hyuran woman had taken her leave and his mother had returned to her chores, it was impossible to tune out the soft sounds of her muffled weeping.

"What if I can't, Mama?" Zhai'a whispered into his mother's shawl.

"You can, and you will. Pimoh will look after you as best she can, and your Auntie Fufucha as well." Zhai laughed softly and held him tighter, curling in on him to press her forehead against his. "Menphina have mercy, those bigoted fools have no idea how stubborn you can be when you've been told you can't do something."
