‘Deep in my madness, witches gave me hope’: Elizabeth Sankey on motherhood, depression and witches
While battling through the darkness of severe postpartum anxiety, Elizabeth Sankey saw a light of solidarity in the stories of witchcraft Four years ago, when my son was only one-month-old, he and I were admitted to a mother and baby unit, a psychiatric…

We were in bits when we saw this open letter on Friday, put together by a group of audio-makers. It’s Sunday morning as we write this and it already has well over 800 signatures. 😭 docs.google.com/document/d/1...
White cut out letters on a black background read ‘Save Short Cuts!’A screenshot of the opening of the letter. It reads, “We are devastated by the news of the BBC’s cancellation of Short Cuts.
In a time where audio imaginations are being squashed by commercial realities, Short Cuts has been a stronghold for creativity. While the podcasting market exploded, and imploded, Short Cuts has been a life raft for audio-makers and artists from all over the world to hold onto. Rather than fostering one particular style of storytelling, Short Cuts continues to inspire a generation of makers around the world to try new things, be ambitious, and tell stories they can’t tell elsewhere. In this way, the influence of Short Cuts goes far beyond its series. It is more than just a podcast, it is a call to action, a cultural hub, an informal mentorship programme, an ode to audio that takes time. We agree with The Guardian’s Miranda Sawyer “that this is one of the most important programmes on UK radio”.”

WITCHES by Elizabeth Sankey, showing now on @mubi.bsky.social is doc with something to say - about the psychosis that some people experience after giving birth - and does it with pop culture knowing and flair. I really enjoyed it. Use my link to get a month of MUBI for free mubi.com/en/t/web/glo...

Broke out the Prince/Seinfeld shirt for a very special dinner celebrating Elizabeth Sankey's Witches, which comes to Mubi globally next week. Gorgeous, urgent filmmaking about the gender health gap and the solidarity found between women when the system fails. Add to your watch list!
