Is the problem that Hollywood are gambling too much on risky, alienating auteur projects, or that the gauge for a film’s success is box office haul across 48hrs?

Was in the playground at Parliament Hill with my daughter and there were a big group of pre-teen boys who’d come there after their rugby practice. They were playing tag, the twist being, whoever was “it” had to shout, “Little Death is coming!!” and everyone else would scream and run away.

my new @lwlies.com column is out! i wrote about the relationship between concert films and the audience – when to replicate an experience and when to create one that is singular – featuring pulp, ryuichi sakamoto, r.e.m., david byrne &c. read and subscribe!! mailchi.mp/tcolondon/al...
pale yellow graphic overlaid with a picture of four sillouettes against a red-orange sun projected on the back of a dark stage. the header reads 'THE LETTER BY CLAIRE BIDDLES'.yellow background with text reading:
Many of these films aim to re-articulate the feeling of being an audience member at the show. But what if watching a concert film was its own original experience, rather than a recreation? In December 2022, I tuned into Playing the Piano, a livestreamed performance by Ryuichi Sakamoto. Shot in black and white by his son, Neo Sora (director of Happyend), the recording shows no live audience, no accompanying musicians, no other visible people in the room. Although billed as Sakamoto’s final performance – he died of cancer just three months later – it was actually a constructed film edited together from footage shot over the course of a week, as Sakamoto was too weak to perform for an uninterrupted hour.

Although stemming from necessity, the decision to assemble Sakamoto’s ‘performance’ from several separate performances actually adds to the poetry of the final film, which was released in a slightly altered cut as Opus in 2023. This is an audience experience that can’t be recreated, because it never happened in the first place.

I’m excited for The Magician’s Nephew, especially as its story is almost identical to Barbie. Although have yet to be able to picture Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew. Also, can confirm it’s the best Narnia book and you don’t have to read any others to enjoy it.

Have the fondest memories of time spent with Jeremy. What were meant to be short chats at his Hanway St, and later Notting Hill, offices ended up lasting hours, as he walked and talked me through his vast archives. Boy, could that man tell a story. A warm, generous titan, and a devastating loss.

Heinous. Both instances are very conspicuous and completely unnecessary. How can any artwork that employs these methods, however briefly, take the moral high ground against any subject?

For his possible final film, Tender Loving Care, Mike Leigh decided to make his own Tokyo Story. Exceptional tragicomic exploration of life’s disappointments, and follow-up to the underloved (and equally great) Hard Truths.

Caught a restoration of Tinto Brass’s Deadly Sweet (1967) in Venice, an all-timer London location film. Highlight a chase that starts in Piccadilly Circus, goes into Holborn tube station, then ends up at Clapton dog track.

As a cultural critic focusing on film, I see a work like Eli Roth's gen AI-powered Ice Cream Man has having more in common with, say, a bluetooth sound bar than a work of cinema. "But is it art?" you say. The answer is that, if you employ such methods of creation, then no, it is not.
