My parents considered naming me [Welsh for lastname] [Lastname] as it’s a nice first name and my Grandad was Welsh They actually named me [uncommon negative American slang term] and it was a wild morning when I first heard a cartoon character repeatedly used my name as a kid-friendly curse word

Depending on how you read it, she could just be asking her followers which label suits her best 😅

I’d not considered the Hades games a franchise (but don’t disagree). They’re punching above their weight with only two entries though!! Just shows how great they are 😆

Every year on 19 December, the famous Christmas lights at Mousehole in Cornwall are dimmed between 8 and 9pm, leaving just the Cross and Angels shining down across the village and out to sea.

The first two that come to mind (who I know have reviewed Mothership _modules_) are @valerialoves.bsky.social and thealexandrian.net. Otherwise, most reviews I’ve seen are of the system, not the Module

Looking back at the floor plan, that makes a lot of sense. Hadn’t considered that the top floor wouldn’t all be at the same level!

Given how bad a lot of stuff they show is, I worry about the lack of stairs pics. Plus, how do you even get to the LHS bedroom?

We always had a sick bowl (I grew up in the UK) but it was a washing up bowl that was only ever used for this purpose. The idea of it being a mixing bowl makes me unhappy though…

In the past I’ve been on front rows for shows where I’m tired but am having a great time. Sometimes this includes shows where friends performed. They’ve told me I can look like this 😐 To emphasize: I was having a good time, I’m just not always a good choice for the front rows 😓

As someone who thinks he’s pretty good at keeping up with stuff I care about, I still missed it. I would’ve bought a book and attended an interesting event but I missed it. You can definitely post more 😅

I carefully curate my social media so I can keep up with everyone I follow. I try to at least skim every post Last year, a comedian I like posted *the morning after* that a signing for a book she’d written, that I was interested in, in my city, on an evening I was free, had gone really well

I was talking to a comedian (who travelled via trains a lot for work). She was trying to reduce phone usage and read books instead. She bought a fancy “phone cage” that wouldn’t open until a certain amount of time passed. She tried it out and it was great, until the conductor asked for her ticket 😅

I did 9 years undergrad & PhD at the same university. Can’t think of any black *staff* in any of the three departments I got teaching from Scraping the barrel: towards the end of my PhD, a black PhD student started in my department? Don’t remember him being all that interested in teaching, though…

I spoke to someone last year who’d genuinely considered changing her name to “Zaphod Beeblebrox” when she transitioned. One of her friends persuaded her out of it (the name, not the transition, she seemed real happy with the transition)

I grew up around the peaks but don’t live too close anymore, so I’m not too updated about local things. But I feel the fact that (at least) three UK national parks (including the peaks) are on fire should be like, front page news!!

I’ve had a fair bit of rain where I live. I’m visiting family in the midlands this weekend and WOW! I did not realise how yellow ALL of the grass is *everywhere* at the moment There are wildfires in the peaks too, which I feel should be much bigger news!

That’s cool to know, thanks! Midwives always seem to work that much more than everyone else! My cousin is a midwife and it sounded like she had a full time job ON TOP of her undergrad degree. And me “just” doing a PhD was a lot!

Sam H @samwithabeard.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Might I ask what doctor of midwifery means? As I’ve never heard that title before Is it like a midwife with a PhD on that topic? A senior midwife? Something else that is obvious if you’re familiar with the American healthcare system but isn’t if you’re not?

Here’s what I came up with. I basically ignored anyone who didn’t vote for the five with voting intention data BUT there weren’t many of the so it’s probably fine
Table of handwritten data showing Farage winning with 64% of votes and Count Binface getting 36%

I saw a video of an MP, talking about how one major place ace people face conversion therapy is in medical environments. And the bill just, lets them continue doing that? Sorry to vent but.. it sucks (and I haven’t even mentioned trans folk, who’ll bear the worst of this)

Sam H @samwithabeard.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
I felt very torn when I saw the news that we were due to be included. Cause, like, genuine legal acknowledgement that we exist is amazing and so many people have worked so hard to make that happen. Especially as the bill is supposed to protect us But.. the bill *doesn’t*

among the other deficiencies, they're still defining sexual orientation in the terms of the Equality Act 2010 meaning that asexual people - known to face higher levels of conversion practices - are not covered by the letter of the law and will have to rely on a sympathetic judge setting precedent

We do share a wall with the (now active again) church. But we’re otherwise independent of them. Just a theatre that happens to be in part of an old (maybe late Victorian?) church

I don’t know all the details (I’ve mainly heard it secondhand) but noise is one of the major problems. ~Plus we need a new roof but that’s a different can of worms~ But good to know the folk they’ve been talking to know and care about their stuff!!

I’m involved with a community theatre in an old church (which is too hot in the summer and until they got IR heaters, was too cold in the winter too). They have resources to get it and are trying to. But the AC people are struggling to work out how to do it!!

I’ve heard of multiple myths and legends which explain and document small changes in the stars from VERY long ago. Makes sense that we might have tales of the creatures we once lived alongside (also VERY long ago)!

I think they got a new medicine from some novel extraction method, which was different to the modern production of that medicine. But like, it had chemicals with similar properties from this ancient method. They knew what they were doing, even if they didn’t know why it worked

This is less about the supernatural and more about people underestimating people in the past but I saw a really interesting talk a few years ago It was a collaboration between scientists and some historians, translating and testing *really* old English science books

A couple years back, I (a cis man) managed to mess up a hip joint, which the physio told me, *is only meant to move during childbirth*. It was very painful at the time and still causes me pain on bad days This is just one very minor aspect of giving birth. It’s given me a sense of the scale of it…

I had to move back to my hometown for about 6 months last year. Their world food section killed me 🥲 EVERY SINGLE Herb and Spice (other than salt/pepper) was in the World section!! I think it took 3 supermarkets to get coriander one time 😭😭

I think it’s been over 6 months since I had a return journey without a delay repay on at least one leg… On the bright side, I’ve recently started commuting by train (with an understanding manager) so my commute is actually about 25% cheaper than it looked on paper!
