"The Quiet State: Micro-Surveillance and Normalisation in Tibet" is finally out, open access & available for free here: link.springer.com/book/10.1007.... It's about the new methods of authoritarian rule indicated by mechanisms used to manage Tibetan nuns, and about research methods in closed areas.

The Quiet State

This open access book uses open-source analysis to reveal hidden state surveillance of Tibetan nuns, offering new methods for post-ethnographic research.

I’d say “skill issue,” except many of these people are much, much better at their Asian languages than I am, so … I won’t.

It mystifies me that people think of #4 as a bad thing.

It’s a luxury to be able to make unspecified references to “the pandemic,“ and I do not take it for granted.

000

Even deeper derangement, quite likely, but …?

100

If our current moment AI-wise had happened to coincide with the depths of the pandemic … what?

I was publicly scolded about these trousers by a more stylish friend once. “You cannot wear those pants with that jacket.“ What kind of jacket should I … “Or at all.” Oh. Well, that‘s OK, there’s probably another pair in one of these pockets.

010

I am somewhat confident that they didn’t have this many pockets when they went in there.

A box of my clothes from 20 years ago has resurfaced. Quite a time capsule, like scrolling through an old iPod. An excellent “Gameboy Variations” Beck t-shirt, and a pair of cargo pants that seems to have at least one pocket for every year they’ve been in storage. I keep finding more, it’s amazing.

Slightly less drab Mr Bean.

010

This is why I make sure most of my posts are bad. If they were popular with any regularity, the bafflement would be paralysing, so I have to avoid that at all costs. And then it’s the bad ones that are popular, but I have to try.

Like, is this a 172-liker, really? It’s barely funny even if you know who I am, which only about three of these people do. Spillover enthusiasm from the previous post, I guess. But still, again: I do not understand how these things work.

For once, I do have some sympathy with Siri’s attempt to change that to “Hunan trafficking.” Not a bad guess, well done.

When Songs… turned 40, the first Black president was coming to the end of his second term, and the US was about to elect a woman as his successor. That was a long ten years.

Was that the first hip hop track to get through to me? Might have been. I wasn’t very long out of my There Is No Point In Listening To Anything But The Beatles phase, so it’s possible.

Sorry, didn’t mean to hurt anyone there
