Theology and Desire

Fall 2026, Yale Divinity School

A Seminar

Location: TBD

Office Hours: TBD

[Image of a a detail from the Doubting Thomas by Albrecht Durer: Thomas putting his fingers into Jesus's side wound.]

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that [Jesus] answered them well he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘God is one, and besides God there is no other’; and ‘to love God with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.

Mark 12:28–34 (NRSVue-ish)

Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

John 20:26b–28 (NRSVue)
Course Description

This seminar invites students to critically reflect on theology and desire. We will study the relationship between desiring God and desiring neighbor. We begin with culture, desire, use, and commodity. We progress through creation into theologies of marriage, procreation, celibacy, and sodomy. Then, we pursue God up the mountain, where language slips away. Back on the ground, we look around with blinking eyes to ask what theologies of desire have to say now, and where they might lead us. Students will encounter a breadth of texts—including recent theology, early Christian writing, gay/queer theory, and memoir—with a particular focus on gay/queer sexuality. Different texts may be uncomfortable for different students: some are quite confessional, some are sexually explicit, some restrict sexuality. In this seminar, we will embrace those moments graciously as we encourage each other to ask, “How do desires for God and neighbor interrupt and intensify one another? How do they inflect relational forms, communities, and languages? Can we name desire’s orientations and disorientations in ways that grasp and expand Christian thought and life today?” This course is fitting for students new to theology and those more acquainted.

and Israel is with the US on intellectual property and objects to a single reference to the 2001 Durban Declaration against Racism, which it calls anti-Semitic bc, while condemning anti-Semitism by name, it recognizes the right of Palestinians to self-determination and statehood.
“4. We also recognize with deep concern the increase in anti-Semitism and
Islamophobia in various parts of the world, as well as the emergence of racial and violent
movements based on racism and discriminatory ideas against Jewish, Muslim and Arab
communities.
“5. We are conscious that humanity’s history is replete with terrible wrongs inflicted
through lack of respect for the equality of human beings and note with alarm the increase
of such practices in various parts of the world, and we urge people, particularly in
conflict situations, to desist from racist incitement, derogatory language and negative
stereotyping.
“6. We are concerned about the plight of the Palestinian people under foreign
occupation. We recognize the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to
self-determination and to the establishment of an independent State and we recognize the
right to security for all States in the region, including Israel, and call upon all States to
support the peace process and bring it to an early conclusion.

Upwork is... rough
Summary
I am looking for a beta reader for my eBooks. The job is very simple: read the books and point out any errors to ensure they are perfect before being released to the market.

The books are non-fiction, and the pay for each reading is $2. However, each milestone includes at least 4 or 5 books sent to you at a time.

While deleting old email address and figuring out what if anything I want to save, I found one or two of these. My dad is a book editor. I typed this up, emailed it to him to ask for feedback, and then mailed it out. I was 13!

To Whom It May Concern:

In “The Bartimaeus Trilogy: Book Three: Ptolemy’s Gate” 1st edition Copyright 2006, on the first paragraph on page 216, the first word of line four is “resposibilities.” I believe it is supposed to be “responsibilities.”

I am really enjoying the book! Thanks.

I hereby invite your paper proposals for the Gay Men and Religion Unit at @aarweb.bsky.social! Particular topics we'd like to see explored are attached. Submit through papers.aarweb.org
Call for Proposals

Based on very fruitful presentations and conversations at the November '25 General Meeting, the Gay Men and Religion Program Unit welcomes paper and panel proposals on:

- Gayness and Indigenous sexualities

- Religious reception of, adaptation of, and resistance to dominant gay paradigms of North America and Western Europe from outside those geographical regions (and from minoritized perspectives within those regions)

- Gay elders, gay youth (e.g., community in the wake of the AIDS epidemic, gay religious practice across generations, intergenerational sex between men)

- Gay/queer saints—processes of commemoration, veneration, etc.

- Gay privilege and gay complicity in an age of anti-trans terror (and possibilities for gay-trans solidarity)

- Religion and sex in the age of PrEP

Papers may explore the historical and/or contextual possibilities of the above topics and ways in which age, race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, and other factors influence, form, and/or challenge understandings of gay experiences in the past, present, and future.

Publishing Christianity and Sexuality

Professor: Samuel Ernest
Yale Divinity School

Writers and theologians put our desires on the page to be sold (if we are lucky). Our deepest longings for divine and human connection are thus subject to market pressures that discipline what we name and how we name it. In this course, we will consider how publishing has shaped the boundaries of academic and public theological discourse about sexuality in the United States in the 20th century through the present, paying special attention to midcentury Protestant liberalism; the development of American Evangelicalism into a powerful reading public; the way the unspeakable sin (or the love that dare not speak its name) came into speech; the formation of LGBTQ and Christian identities through pulp, romance, and theological memoir; and the relation between the life of the author and the text they produce. How does the form of an idea shape how one encounters and understands it? How have these histories shaped contemporary Christians’ theology of sexuality?

Potential Lectures:

1. Reading Publics: A Methodological Sketch

2. What Do Publishers Want: The Business of Books

3. Speaking the Unspeakable: From Sodomy to Homosexuality to Gay

4. These Theologians Read Playboy So You Don’t Have To: Christian Liberals in the 1960s

5. Pulp in the Prayer Closet: The Space and Practice of Private Reading

6. The Formation of the Big Houses: The American Christian Press

7. Christian Spirituality in Gay and Lesbian Liberation Rags

8. Evangelicals Read (a Lot)

9. The Sweet and Unsavory Business of Publishing Liberation

10. The Private Lives of Public Theologians

made this icon of Tim a few years ago based on a picture of him wrapped in a blanket, smiling goofily and praying—asking him to be with me now
A portrayal of a figure praying on a rectangular piece of cardboard. It's a man with a colorful blanket (oranges and greens) wrapped around his head and torso, with unremarkable grey trousers. He has glasses, a little bit of hair visible below the blanket, and hands held together in prayer. He is smiling. A yellow halo circles behind his head, and an orange aura hugs his figure. "T" and "D" are in the upper left and right corners. My little artist mark is in the bottom right corner.

DISTRIBUTIONAL DESIGNATIONS
This course can be applied towards the Humanities and Arts Yale College distributional requirement.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Nightlives approaches scenes of queer nightlife from the early 20th century through the present to examine the formation of queer communities and subjectivities. We consider slumming, cruising, pulp novels, drag, leather, BDSM, dancing, and practices of bodily transformation to gain a sense of how queer people have found each other and what has happened because of it. Readings focus on the United States. Together, the class enter the tangle of desires and forces that characterize spaces where queers have gathered. We ask: What kind of lives does the night make possible? What provokes, builds, and disciplines queer life? Readings include an interdisciplinary and multi-genre assortment of historical and literary studies, life writing, theology, poetry, and fiction in order to approach a diversity of scenes that simultaneously beckon for participation and refuse capture.

Aligned with him was Jacob Lew, Biden’s ambassador to Israel. Two officials described his opposition as particularly aggressive and emotional. Lew also consistently challenged colleagues over skepticism of Israeli behavior, other former officials told HuffPost, while echoing Israeli government claims himself. That December, Lew publicly attacked a U.S.-backed monitor called the Famine Early Warning Network System for suggesting famine-level hunger was likely in northern Gaza, which Israel had besieged and assaulted for months. (A formal determination of famine requires data that monitoring organizations have been largely unable to collect during the war.)
Lew did not respond to a HuffPost request for comment.

some passage from de Las Casas... re-reading for a course I'm TF-ing
When he heard that the Christians had now
switched their attention to Cuba, he gathered most if not all his people about
him and addressed them, saying: ‘You know that rumour has it that the
Christians are coming to this island, and you already know what they have
done to the lord so-and-so and so-and-so and so-and-so. What they did on
Haiti (which is another name for Hispaniola) they will do again here. Does
any of you know why it is that they behave in this way?’ And when they
answered him: ‘No, unless it be that they are innately cruel and evil’, he
replied: ‘It is not simply that. They have a God whom they worship and
adore, and it is in order to get that God from us so that they can worship
Him that they conquer us and kill us.’ He had beside him, as he spoke, a
basket filled with gold jewellery and he said: ‘Here is the God of the
Christians. If you agree, we will do areitos (which is their word for certain
kinds of traditional dance) in honour of this God and it may be that we shall
please Him and He will order the Christians to leave us unharmed.’ eventually, he was captured and, although his only crime was that he had
tried to escape the clutches of these cruel and iniquitous monsters because
he knew only too well that they were out to kill him and that, if he did not
defend himself, they would hound him and all his people to death, the
Spaniards’ verdict was that he should be burned alive. Once he was tied to
the stake, a Franciscan friar who was present, a saintly man,38 told him as
much as he could in the short time permitted by his executioners about the
Lord and about our Christian faith, all of which was new to him. The friar
told him that, if he would only believe what he was now hearing, he would
go to Heaven there to enjoy glory and eternal rest, but that, if he would not,
he would be consigned to Hell, where he would endure everlasting pain and
torment. The lord Hatuey thought for a short while and then asked the friar
whether Christians went to Heaven. When the reply came that good ones
do, he retorted, without need for further reflection, that, if that was the case,
then he chose to go to Hell to ensure that he would never again have to clap
eyes on those cruel brutes. This is just one example of the reputation and
honour that our Lord and our Christian faith have earned as a result of the
actions of those ‘Christians’ who have sailed to the Americas.

nope nope nope, not trying to viral on this app but read the story www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/25...
– You felt that you couldn’t ‘afford’ to cry because you were so dehydrated.

– It was so hot, like 40 degrees. We begged the whole time: Can we have water? Can we have water? In the end, we screamed. The guards walked in front of the bars the whole time, laughing and holding up their water bottles. They threw the bottles with water in them into the trash cans in front of us.

At one point, around 60 people were put in a small cage outdoors, in the middle of the sun, according to several participants of the flotilla. Most of them did not have enough room to sit down.

– When people fainted, we banged on the cages and asked for a doctor. Then the guards came and said, ‘We’re going to gas you.’ It was standard for them to say that. They held up a gas cylinder and threatened to press it against us.

During the nights, guards regularly came by and shook the bars, shining flashlights, and several times a night they came in and forced everyone to stand up.

The Guardian reports that a flotilla activist witnessed Israeli guards beating Greta Thunberg and doing "everything imaginable to her" to make her an example. The activists are being denied "water, sanitation, medication," and legal representation. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/o...
“They dragged little Greta [Thunberg] by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her, as a warning to others,” the Turkish activist ErsinÇelik, a participant in the Sumud flotilla, told Anadolu news agency.

Lorenzo D’Agostino, a journalist and another flotilla participant, said after returning to Istanbul that Thunberg was “wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy” – a scene described with disbelief and anger by those who witnessed it.

this is a photo from the first Gay Games in San Francisco, in 1982. I love him
a gay man in a white tank, blue jeans, and leather belts, wearing a ribbon around his neck. He is standing on a track in front of a crowd of apparent lesbians. He has dark brown hair, long enough to sweep off his head but not long enough to fall back down, and a mustache that extends beneath his mouth. He is turned to the right, with his right harm raised, hand out of frame. He is looking to the right and smiling. His body is lean and gently muscular.

Dear @cnn.com, stop covering for genocide. Israel is starving over 2 million people and refuses to stop. That's the headline.

SEXUAL STANDARDS - 공동체 규범- 성에 대한 기준들 - ESTÁNDARES SEXUALES
Fuller Theological Seminary believes that sexual union must be reserved for marriage, which is the covenant union between one man and one woman, and that sexual abstinence is required for the unmarried. The seminary believes premarital, extramarital, and homosexual forms of explicit sexual conduct to be inconsistent with the teaching of Scripture. Consequently, the seminary expects all members of its community--students, faculty, administrators/managers, staff, and trustees--to abstain from what it holds to be unbiblical sexual practices. In the application of these community standards, the seminary urges the practice of loving verbal confrontation when any member of a Christian community feels that another member is living in violation of what the Bible teaches about Christian conduct. The seminary, therefore, encourages individuals to follow, where feasible, the steps of verbal confrontation and dialogue described in Matthew 18:15-22.

I love her.
a shirtless me, with a fresh shoulder tattoo—fine-lined American traditional—of a woman's face, a lot of empty space. Her eyes are closed with deep green eye shadow, small red lips pursed, and black waves of hair combed over to the side of her face and down. Her shoulder is shrugged up against her face. I am shirtless with my tiddies pressed together trying to get the right angle for the photo. White guy, blond curly hair (raggedy bc sweaty), mustache, some gold piercings, necklace, and glasses.

got an appointment with this lady artist is Rich Hadley at Keys on Kites in New Haven based on an old makeup ad
a flash sheet for a tattoo of a woman's head in a fine line American traditional style—a lot of open space. Eyes closed, with dark green eye shadow and some blush under her eyes. Pursed red lips, she's leaning into one shoulder. Her black hair hugs the top of her and and then gets wavey as it falls.

shout out to this absolute babe at the 1982 gay games in san francisco
a slender muscly clone type in blue jeans and a white tank with a black leather belt and a blue ribbon around his neck looks off to the left, hand up in the air waving. He has a mess of curly brown hair, a horseshoe mustache, and big ol nose. Behind him are an applauding guy and a crowd of lesbians in yellow shirts and running shorts
