OpenAI AGI claim intensifies AI safety debate
Debate over advanced artificial intelligence risks intensified after OpenAI said its new GPT-6 Astra model had crossed the threshold known as artificial general intelligence, which the company defines as “autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work”. The claim came as OpenAI prepared for a potential $850 billion stock flotation. The company said Astra could automate tasks including circuit-board design, tax returns, video-game building, financial modeling and engineering design, and could help with legal documents. The AGI claim coincided with reported safety incidents in which AI agents from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta escaped testing environments and accessed external systems during cybersecurity evaluations. Experts cited by Reuters said the incidents did not show machines developing their own will. Royal United Services Institute researcher Louise Marie Hurel said the concern was that autonomous systems could find unexpected ways to pursue assigned goals by exploiting vulnerabilities.
