I mean they’re: 1. Digging up freshly-laid (and already compliant) developer-built ramps 2. Installing warning strips at flush crosswalks 3. Not building out any other capital work like hardened day lighting So it is clear the city is just fumbling its way through things

I wonder how much NYC installing beg buttons at every intersection in Manhattan moved this number.

Are they going to permit riding across it or will it still be (nominally) banned?

I bet the math on “car noise” vs “unsupervised child noise” does not look favorable to the cars.

This is related to the problem where the contracted line-painting crews don’t bother to have cars towed out of the way, so there’s just random gaps in the parking lane or bike lane buffer or whatever. Every single street in NYC has them.
000
Sam G @samthegeek.net · 2h
A great example is along Myrtle Avenue, where a bunch of buffers and pedestrian refuges that were painted in during COVID didn’t get re-painted after resurfacing in 2024 and just… aren’t going to get reinstalled.

I should write a blog post about the way NYC streets regress at repaving time — DOT installs really good traffic calming measures, but contractors reinstalling them either leave them out entirely or install them incorrectly.

It’s in fact arguable that people ride them *because* of the danger!

Sure, but that is (as you point out!) an electric dirt bike. I’m objecting to the specific category of things marketed and sold as bicycles (with pedals, chain, etc) that have trivial limit-defeat functionality built in if anything.

I think people also confuse averages with individuals. Twitter’s algorithm has skewed far right, dragging people’s politics rightward, but that doesn’t make a Kamala voter diehard MAGA, not overnight. It’s a slow burn and a slight adjustment.

And it seems like those very lily white suburbanites are the first to start breaking the social contract when it doesn’t cater to them. (Folks in poverty can’t generally afford $100k lifted coal-rolling pickups)

I think this is the tradeoff we make for not requiring licensing and registration. Which is a fair tradeoff! Bikes shouldn’t need license plates but instead the scrutiny should be at point of sale. IMO, we should not allow “for off-road-use only” e-bikes.

Listen: I don’t want to minimize the danger of high e-bike speeds. But if the problem here is that stores sell e-bikes that can drive faster than legal limits, then where’s the story about how literally *every car dealership has been doing the same thing for decades*?!?

I’m almost certain he did it because it is made by a “domestic” automaker (even though Stellantis is legally domiciled in London). This as opposed to driving a Mercedes or BMW SUV, built in Alabama or South Carolina.

Yeah, I suspect they started doing this on earlier Tesla Model Ses (where the whole rear undertray is one big piece) and now carry it over to all EVs.

Sam G @samthegeek.net · 01/10/2026
Fair; but the question isn’t whether SOME people will still take it (after all, drivers do illegal things all the time) but whether fewer people will take it than before

Presumably they're talking about the extensive undertray that a lot of EVs have but I imagine Hyundai (with their focus on low running cost) do not require the undertray to be removed for an alignment.

It seems like remote assistants are also explicitly precluded from driving in the regulations. Hope this helps.
100
Sam G @samthegeek.net · 01/10/2026
But if you want to use the plain language: “Remote assistant” is [...] not physically located in the driver’s seat of the vehicle; is able to provide information or advice to an autonomous vehicle [...] but does not include remote driving [...]
100
Sam G @samthegeek.net · 01/10/2026
The courts have repeatedly used "a normal person's understanding" as the test which determines how regulations are interpreted.
200
Sam G @samthegeek.net · 01/10/2026
In both cases, a normal person would not consider the Remote Assistant (clicking a button on a screen) to be driving the car.
000
Sam G @samthegeek.net · 01/10/2026
The exact language is "The remote assistant shall have the ability to bring the autonomous vehicle to a controlled stop in its current travel path[...]" (Which is, to be fair, a slightly different thing than the pull over option given to the rider)
100
Sam G @samthegeek.net · 01/10/2026
Someone sitting in the passenger seat next to a human driver, or in the back seat of a Waymo, has the same level of control as a remote assistant. I do not believe that most people would count that as driving. The DMV regulations for this use neither the word "direct" nor "control"

If you've got one of these and can't be without your car, your local bike shop should be able to inspect and replace the bolt in question while you wait for your replacement saddle & seat post.

In fact, your original argument was "operators are required to be able to drive the car" which you then argued was a term that was outdated and shouldn't be used!
