She’d bring them cakes and sweets, treats the clergy and teachers would eat while the kids ate nothing but porridge and broth, served after a day of labour (not learning). Because residential schools were institutions build on child labour.

One of the stories she told me, that she gave me permission to share, is about how she would steal food for the other kids. There was a teacher who favoured her and she used that to steal food for the rest of the girls.

Through the years of listening to her she started unpacking her experiences and the same stories she told, softened with a dismissive joke or platitude, were starting to lay bare. I only wish someone would have listened earlier, before she passed.

I feel like there’s this expectation of perfection and performance from Elders, especially in a post TRC era. There feels like there’s an expectation of performance of our trauma, survivors can only be believed if they are respectable, if they provide a good sound clip for CBC.

One thing I wish people would understand is that yes, survivor stories shift over the years. When we first started talking about her time there, she would talk about something horrific but wrap it in a joke or like it was a passive thing, insisting everyone was being dramatic.

I hold stories for my kokum about her time in residential school, many she told me in her last few years of life. Sometimes I feel like I don’t know how to be a good steward of these stories now that she’s passed on, because all I feel is a deep boiling pit of rage inside me.

Sometimes I think about how my parents had their first kid at like 19 and 21 and had the both of us by their mid-20s and I PHYSICALLY cannot imagine and I’m 34. They had a teenager by now. And a 9 year old me and all I did was yap, was perpetually bored, and never stopped moving.
