The Works Progress Administration was created in May 1935 as part of the New Deal to provide jobs to the unemployed during the Great Depression. One of the WPA’s most idealistic goals was to send books and librarians to areas where there were none. Read more: bit.ly/4hkgtNC #ALA150

A superb portrait of Richard Harris by Nigel Parry Parry remembers the shoot: "I rode down on my motorcycle & it rained the whole of the way down. I only had one light that was left working because all of my lights got wet."

We finally got more shelves put up and now I'm unboxing more of the boxes of books we've moved here with us. A bit like Christmas. More than a few books I'd forgotten I read. Many full of post-it notes on pages and paragraphs and phrases. Maybe I'll post a few soon . . .

Another song prompt for me, one I think of often: Sitting on the dock of the bay, watching the tide roll away. That's my ambition, sit and watch the tide. Awe. It's like watching a miracle. Of course some science minded person will ruin it by explaining about gravity & the moon and blah blah blah.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Just stumbled across these terrific Jim Richardson photos of the annual spring prairie burning in Kansas's Flint Hills. Remarkable to think how native peoples set these enormous fires in the grasslands every year for centuries upon centuries. www.jimrichardsonphotography.com/index/G00002...
In an aerial fire, flames make serpentine patterns at dusk over the rolling terrain of Kansas's Flint Hills. Two burned trees are silhouetted against a sinuous arc of fire that twists toward the horizon at sunset.
