ABC was a longtime underperformer in St. Louis dating to its years on KTVI. And the way the news department was built, with a lot of outside talent, failed to get the attention of a pretty stagnant set of viewers. River City's merger with Sinclair and Barry Baker's manner of exit was the last straw

By that, I mean in the last 25 years. KDNL was a long-suffering second indie that wavered between shooting itself in the foot (STV) and being boxed out by a better station (KPLR). River City Broadcasting was good local ownership. But then they got saddled with ABC. That didn't end well.

I stayed a night in a hotel near Forest Park last year and attended a wedding in the downtown Holiday Inn 15 years ago. That gives me more of a commitment than KDNL ever had to St. Louis.
KDNL, which is owned by Baltimore-based Sinclair Broadcast Group, has not had local news programming since 2001. It shut down its news department a month after carrying costly commercial-free coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Sinclair spokesperson Jessica Bellucci said KDNL will resume local morning and primetime newscasts sometime later this year.

"This new direction allows us to invest directly in local news and programming, reinforcing our long-term commitment to serving the St. Louis community," she said in an email.

It has now been 2 hours plus and Axios (which will certainly have something for its morning newsletters) has no story on its site. Don't count on them for timely weekend or overnight news.

Does anyone recognize this ESPN mic flag? Half soccer ball, half basketball, and I can't find any reference to it online.
An ESPN mic flag. White cube with a red stroke rounded rectangle, the bottom third in red with the ESPN logo in white. On the remainder is the top half of a soccer ball in blue and the bottom half of a basketball in red to form a circle.

We'd have to see a preseason schedule, and the teams generally generate those things. It is not like the regular season schedule where the league generates it.

Useless sports media fact: With the Rams moving to KCBS-TV as their originating station, for the first time ever both of LA's teams have the same preseason media partner. But it's happened in the Bay Area and New York: * KBHK (49ers + Raiders), 1975 * WPIX (Giants + Jets), 1978–80, 1987–92

Most of these are in metro Phoenix, a few in Tucson and Yuma, a couple in rural areas. And I didn't count either Valley (Sanders) or Valley Union (Elfrida), which fall into the rural category.

Seriously. There is a very strong change some combination of the following words is a high school in Arizona: Cactus, Canyon, Desert, Mountain, Ridge, Shadow, Valley, View, Vista. And a fair number more have only one of these words with something else. Not counting private schools...

Watch the Minnesota Lynx. They were the last WNBA team to be reliant on one of the FDSN RSNs. They still have not announced broadcasting plans for 2026 (nor have the Indiana Fever, who the last two years were broadcast by Tegna). They may also be a pilot for whatever the T-Wolves do.

The number of potential rightsholders really varies in these markets. There are a few options for the Clippers in Los Angeles. There are way fewer for the Grizzlies in Memphis.

It's unclear really if any of these additional NBA teams want to go the Suns/Jazz/etc. route of starting from an OTA base instead of streaming with a small number of OTA games. Keep in mind that many of these deals, especially in re: streaming, will be one-year stopgaps per the NBA's mandate.

...as Scripps elected retrans consent for WPXE but said it was free to MVPDs as long as it was carrying Ion. The same thing applied in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Tampa Bay, and Nashville — all cities where Scripps now has or will have hockey rights and where MVPDs have to pay now for it.

Some thoughts on the FDSN demise as it pertains to basketball... Scripps Sports is not much of a contender, except in Detroit and Milwaukee. Scripps has said they must own a Big 4 affiliate to make a Spot independent work. Milwaukee has been earmarked for this technically for years...

Most of the bees were at the Polytechnic campus, a 23-mile drive from the Tempe campus, so a lot of the warnings were irrelevant.

Monique Sammi Brie @sammi.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
My other question would be what type of antenna you are using. In the direction of Portland, WMTW is a VHF signal and WCSH and WGME are on UHF.

WVII is similar to WLBZ (left), but WABI has a site that is just far better for reception in your direction. Your field strength would be better from WCSH.

Ah OK. Somehow I thought you were in Brunswick. Since you're in between Portland and Bangor, I'll point out that WLBZ is a tougher catch than it should be. It's on RF channel 2 (low-VHF is tough to receive in digital) with an ERP of 3 kW. That'd actually qualify as a low-power TV station!

Monique Sammi Brie @sammi.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
Have you contacted the engineering department at News Center Maine? Strange issue to have. Brunswick is about 37 miles (60 km) from the WCSH transmitter site so I presume that's the one in question.
