What if children's media was art?

Well, I guess we live in a world where that's sort of a settled question, isn't it? It's cool to watch kid's movies, and tiktok is full of recommendations for the next big Young Adult book. We live in an All Ages World.

But ok, dream up a world for me where children's books aren't considered literature, children's animation isn't "for adults too", and so on. Imagine everyone agreed this stuff was not art. Then imagine you, contrary to everyone around you, do hold it in artistic esteem and want to rally others to your cause.

What would that actually mean for how you relate to children's media? What kind of criticism would you do in this imaginary world?

Notice that stuff like "theme" or "political insights" didn't make it onto this graph. These are films plugged straight into the id. When I say "horniness" too I'm talking about both sex and death. I think we can be honest about the shared appeal of both nude swimming scenes and geysers of fake blood, and as far as I can tell they both develop basically along the same arc as the series progresses, which makes this bogus graph even easier to draw.

In another episode, though, there's this profoundly sweet moment where two girls bond over their self harm scars, and then bond further over the various psychiatric medications they've been mis-prescribed. "You know that stuff can really fuck up your liver." I've sat through so many conversations like this. Sometimes it can feel like half the reason queer people hang out is to bitch about all the horrifying shit we've gone through. This show wallows in extremity and metatext at times, but maybe that's just the style of art made by digital natives. Scenes like this feel so genuine to me that I can't help but be won over. At one point, after trading stories of low moments and socially stigmatized behavior, one of the Karamazov girls is asked why she's sharing stories that could end her career if they got out. "Because this is reality," she replies. "I'm telling you so we can face each other and build trust."

I love how some shots in baseball come from these cameras positioned far away and zoomed way in, resulting in this kinda weird flat tableaux of action. this is especially good imo when the plays are just phenomenally stupid and screwball.

Leftists typically think of neoliberalism as a conspiracy to consolidate class power.25 However, in its self-presentation — as a technocratic agenda — neoliberalism is first and foremost concerned with opposing corruption, in the form of “rent-seeking” by “special interests”. What is supposed to replace rent-seeking is market competition, with its promise of fair outcomes. In that sense, neoliberalism is not so much about shifting the balance of power from the state to the market; rather, it is about fashioning a state that is compatible with market society: a capitalist state. The paradox, for neoliberal ideologues, is that their reforms have everywhere led to rising inequality, and concomitantly, to the capture of state power by a class of the extremely wealthy (centred on finance, insurance and real estate, as well as the military and oil extraction). That class has itself come — through dodgy deals and bailouts — to represent the epitome of corruption. Neoliberalism then provides a framework with which to oppose its own results.
