When I was a teen in high school in the early 2000s, I started my fantasy war epic about sparkledogs (Demons) and beautiful same-faced animes (Angels) learning to make up & kiss. 21 years of improvement later, I'm still going & determined to see it through! #art Happy #WebcomicDay! Don't give up!

It's #webcomicday! White Noise is my long-running webcomic about queer monsters who are just trying to live, goddamit. There's a whole arc and a bunch of smaller stories to read at www.white-noise-comic.com already. Right now we're in the middle of a ghost story.

Hawk sped along, skimming past the side of a building. Something caught the corner of his vision, though, some movement barreling towards him. He turned his head to look--

--and threw himself clear just in time as the dragon thing, blindingly white in the daylight, antennae streaming back from his jawline, smashed claws-first into the building where Hawk had been. Hawk felt the mass of him pass, the momentum stirring his tail feathers. He wrenched himself around in midair, wings scrambling, and had to flap hard just to stabilize himself again, trying madly to pick up speed. He heard the dragon laugh loudly from behind him, seeing him struggle to recover.

"Not so tough in the air, are ya?!" the dragon roared. Hawk banked, and the dragon leapt lightly back into the air after him. "C'mere!!"

Hawk gripped the duffel's strap which ran over his chest, wings pumping hard. "You gotta be fucking kidding me," he grunted, teeth gritted.

"I did not realize how much the spell meant to your family," Yoshi said.

"Oh, it doesn't," Teige replied offhandedly, picking up a bit of string that had been lying on the table. "The spell is dead simple, you've seen. It's the family tradition that's so damn important."

"Er, that's what I meant," Yoshi said uncertainly, watching as Teige looped the string around his fingers and passed it between them back and forth, forming different patterns as he went. "Your grandmother wouldn't be upset that you're teaching a total outsider this?"

"My grandmother doesn't speak to me anymore." Teige's tone was matter-of-fact, though he was looking at the string around his fingers rather than at Yoshi. "Me, or my mum. She disagreed enough with Ma divorcing my dad, but my being transgender was the last straw, as t'were. She expected Ma to disown me, but Ma didn't. So out we went."

Yoshi frowned a little. "...Disown...for being transgender?" she said, as though she didn't see the connection between the two. Teige had taken one loop of the string in his teeth and pulled it up gently, forming a sort of narrow triangle with a twist in the middle.

"Happens often enough," he said, keeping the string in his teeth. "Earth's a deadly place to be trans."

Shinobu answered lightly, without looking around, "Well, it is inconvenient, but knowledge demands sacrifice, eh?"

That stung. Wordlessly, Yoshi turned around and retreated into the kitchen. She came to a stop in front of the sink and stood grimacing and rubbing her neck in silence. Shinobu didn't seem to notice her lack of response, absorbed in carefully wrapping objects in the blankets as she took them down from the altar.

She paused, though, when she took the framed photo down, and instead studied it quietly. It was a formal portrait of two women and a dog, taken against an empty backdrop. Both women wore quite simple kimonos; one sat in a chair, and the other stood at her shoulder, with her hands posed on the chair's back. The dog, with a curly tail and small triangular ears, lay at their feet and looked at the camera.

A strangely tender expression had come over Shinobu's face as she looked at the portrait. After a while, she remarked, "...You look less like your mother as you age."

She smoothed the glass over one of the subjects with her paw--the standing woman, who had pale eyes and a familiar nose.

"I think that's a good thing, mind you," she continued. "Not that Michi wasn't beautiful--but you are your own person." She paused again, and added in a more wry tone, "Er, at least in your more human shape, anyway. But your wolf shape, that's just like hers. Minus the fiery bits--that must have come from your father, whoever he is. Michi didn't--"

She'd turned to address Yoshi face-to-face, but Yoshi had gone, so she broke off in puzzlement.
