Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 7hIt must be nice to have short legs. That's my main takeaway. 0110
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The sheriff following the monster through town in Hope is a great recent contender. The scenes of wading through the chaos the monster leaves behind are great in themselves and a perfect build up to the monster itself. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Both this and Memories of Murder struck me with how much it makes rural South Korea seem like Texas. If you set this in Corpus Christie, the sheriff asking people where they got that gun every four minutes would fit just as well. I searched, and it seemed to say it's set in the 90s. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 30/09/2026If you see the ending, you still have to go online to see how it ended. I enjoyed the movie as a whole, but I want to assure you that your timing worked out really well. 021
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I was thinking about this. My most dramatic is typing "star" when I meant to type "*". Some of us are dictating to our fingers. Some of us aren't. There are authors who don't know how to pronounce their characters' names. That couldn't happen to me, though I sometimes forget the spelling. 000

Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I absolutely love that movie. The same people did Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass which came out just a little while ago. It's also really good. It has Penn Jillette basically playing Teller to Weird Al. 110
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I didn't. It's weird how some things launch tons of long lasting careers like the show Taxi or the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But the stage okay for Illumination is so obscure and underground. 110
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I'd never heard of this building. I went on a trip to Montreal. I biked around town and took a bunch of pictures of it. Since then, this is something like the fifth time I've heard someone reference it. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 25/09/2026It's a reasonable next step given that nobody likes them and everybody hates them. 020
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 25/09/2026A crevice opened through the middle of Austin on the east side of Guadalupe. There was a creek running through it, and it was pretty, but I was trapped on the east side and hand to ford the creek and climb the side to get home. 000

Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 22/09/2026It's just as much an outrage if 25% of the population doesn't get any of a set of awards as it does if they get all of them. You'd be shocked if I received the gold medal for every Olympic event. Isn't it equally suspicious that I got none of them? 020
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 22/09/2026I suspected someone was going to find a gap in my explanation. Ramen noodles are fried? Wow. Yes, that's way more relevant than anything I said. 100

Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 22/09/2026While this glossary is harder to read, it was even worse when I originally read it as a script, where a bunch of oddly-named people were just spouting sailing jargon at each other. 030
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 22/09/2026The videos touch a real nostalgia nerve for me. The Bilestoad, Warrior, Punch Out. I'm really showing my age here, but I'm really enjoying the visual design. Even the font hits this early 80s aesthetic in a way most retro games don't. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I saw Hope on Saturday. Along with Memories of Murder, it's a movie that suggests rural South Korea is a lot like rural Texas. It might have the best scenes of people fighting monsters that I've seen in any movie. 000
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Because of the durum wheat flour pasta uses, it's got a stronger structure and keeps shape better when covered in a thick emulsion. People do use cheese sauce on Ramen, but it helps if it's thinner sauce. Similarly, the pecorino sauce for caccio e pepe is think enough they suggest thicker noodles. 140
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/09/2026This sounds like a good theory. Maybe Trump's strength is that he's made people a party to so much evil it's tough to turn on Trump without admitting you've been an asshole (not exclusive with your description). My hunch is that It Will Happen some time in 2027. I don't know where people will jump. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Recent history suggests a rebranding. Someone will come up and say that they hate the corrupt Trump Republican party -- singling out the tariffs and Iran war -- and bring up a dog whistle to rally around. I don't *think* that can be a real force while Trump lives and has an active political role. 110
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/09/2026This seems to be contradicted by what you're quote-tweeting, but I don't completely doubt it. To square this poll and that premise, I'd say there's 9% who don't want to look like losers but would run back to Trump on any pretext. 110
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/09/2026I also like the connections of "oxy", also meaning sharp in Greek. Notably with "oxygen" or "sharp gas" (first noted as part of acids, so it cut) and "oxymoron" or "sharp dull". 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 18/09/2026I saw Resident Evil. It makes me think of a horror After Hours (or Caught Stealing, if you're not old). It's constantly jumping between body horror and comedy in a very organic way. I keep forgetting it's based on a video game. I think people will later on watch it for its 2020s zeitgeist. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I've heard Wonderwall played by three different street performers in Dublin. I prefer to think they're doing this to drive us away. 000

Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I've confirmed that, in Ireland, "Fairytale in New York" by the Pogues is a standard Christmas Carol. Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 28/08/2026I saw Finding Emily. It really struck me how rarely you see a movie set in a British city that isn't London. Finding Emily is set in Manchester. On a related note, if you see it at home, you might want subtitles. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 28/08/2026When an app notifies me that a new contact wants to talk to me and, opening that message, I see a picture of a woman in her 20s with perfect hair and great skin, my immediate reaction is intense disappointment. I'm impressed with how the internet has conditioned me. 020
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I think olive oil is much more of a hot button issue than it seems like it should be. I think you'd really like _The Food Lab_ by J Kenji Lopez-Alt. He uses a strong background in physical sciences and checks a lot of ideas with rigorous testing. 000
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Also, if you boil dried chickpeas with lots of garlic, garlic powder, onion soup mix and nutritional yeast, put it in a bowl with chives and a couple table spoons of olive oil, it's so damn good. 000
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I don't cook a lot of things past olive oil's smoke point. I grew up frying most things in butter, and olive oil has a very comfortable smoke point by comparison. Lots of people have commented on land use, and Olive Oil is better than butter there, too. 010
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Okay, I went for a walk, and more cooking stuff came to mind. Yes, generally, olive oil is kind of a waste to fry with. As I've just demonstrated, I forget that. Also, I infuse olive oil for dressing, and I can taste the infusion when I fry with it. 000
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 26/08/2026Doesn't the flavor stay? It's got a lower smoke point than see oil, but you can still taste it when it's been cooked. It's super common in the US to keep it after it's gone rancid. 120
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 25/08/2026So Ron Leibman was cast in Section Eight playing a character based on Papa? I once asked about it, and Papa wrote me a long letter describing mostly the grisly story of how it got funded and how that later fell through. 110
Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 25/08/2026One of my favorite line in any movie is said by Dolly Parton in Rhinestone: "There are two kinds of people in this world, and you ain't either one of 'em." 120

Sam Jones @samguyjones.bsky.social · 21/08/2026Avenue B Grocery has an authentic early 20th century vibe in a way that's less Johnny Rocket's than Stephen King. I used to pass it every day: whitewashed walls, long out of date soda logos, wooden bench -- right in the middle of a purely residential neighborhood -- I assumed it was a hallucination. 000
