in the underworld, a suffering Tantalus is surrounded by food and water he reaches for but is eternally unable to consume. Detail from 1733 engraving "Tantalus' Torment" by Bernard Picart

The woman who intervened in the Costco attack is a true Halifax hero. She put her body between a racist and the family he was threatening— risking herself to protect strangers— and told that Nazi STFU to his face. May we all find the same courage and presence of mind when neighbours need defending!
A woman stoically blocks the path of a bald fascist in a Costco, diverting his attention and allowing the family he had been abusing to get away. He is looming over her gesticulating and spewing racist vitriol, she is calmly telling him to shut his fucking mouth.

screenshot from phone video taken in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 2026A different woman, looking furious, is about to TRULY CLOBBER a different bald fascist in the head as he marches in a Neo-Nazi demonstration.

Tiny sample of signs from the protest in Halifax today #NSPoli
Protest signs wedged in the fence outside the NS Legislature read 'Farewell to Nova Scotia, the arts are toast' 'Put the tolls back MORON' 'Tiny Tim is in his scrooge era' 'save our stories' 'Houston Pennywise, pound foolish' (with drawing of Pennywise the clown), 'Dave Ritcey, why do you betray your home?' 'If the dancers aren't funded the dancers will leave', 'I've heard of "cancel culture" but this is ridiculous' and an empty frame reading 'poster no longer available due to cuts'

In response to a devastating PC austerity budget, hundreds of people in Halifax have sworn to boo premier Tim Houston and his bootlicking ministers on sight @nsgov.bsky.social
Large board reading "should the cuts pass, we the undersigned hereby pledge to BOO TIM HOUSTON and his complicit stooges, loudly and at every opportunity' and is covered in hundreds of signatures. The sign is in front of Province House in Halifax, NSBack view of the same board, titled "'Boo Tim Houston' Pledge Cont'd", densely covered with many many more signatures

so clearly Dave Ritcey (the minister overseeing the obliteration of our arts and culture) is not much of a "numbers guy". Perhaps we can still reach his heart through the power of images? Please express yourself to cch@novascotia.ca in the medium of your choosing #NSPoli @nsgov.bsky.social #Halisky
Gouache painting of the Nova Scotia coat of arms: a blue X on a white field under a gold shield with a red rampant lion in a double border decorated with fleurs de lis. The lion is thin with visible ribs. It weeps because NS premier Tim Houston plans to starve the province into abject austerity, and neither he nor culture minister minister Dave Ritcey absolutely could not give less of a shit about any of us, our province, or the arts

Tim Houston and Andy Fillmore are threatening to permanently dismantle Halifax's municipal government if they don't get their way in crushing a downtown bike lane. A transparent excuse to consolidate power, this is undemocratic and unacceptable: today's the day to tell them hands off!
NS ACORN's painted parade banner reading: NO Strong Mayor POWER GRAB! Contact your MLA, premier, councillor, mayor. Keep Halifax Democratic!

the vision
An unsubtly edited black-and-white photo of the 1948 Halifax Natal Day Parade. the street is lined with spectators holding clumsily photoshopped signs reading "Keep Halifax democratic: we voted for a council" "15% is not a mandate" "Hands off Halifax! NO to Strong Mayor Powers" and "Fillmore's power grab is a betrayal of our city". A sheepish Mayor Fillmore passes by in a decorated convertible. source: natalday.org

Hey Halifax! Natal Day is a great opportunity to show the mayor how you feel about the dismantling of our municipal government. Bring a sign to the parade! We voted in a council. Say no to Fillmore's strong mayor power-grab; let's keep Halifax democratic! #halisky #bikehfx #HandsOffHalifax
