This must be one of the the most unhinged workplaces in science, ever. In 1966, Fowler asked how air moves through a centrifugal compressor. To answer this question, he put a guy holding a camera on a spinning chair in the middle of a huge turbine wheel spinning […] [Original post on chaos.social]

A vintage line drawing of a fucking HUGE turbine thing, with the shaft going vertical and the blades pointing sideways, that has a fucking GUY sititing in the middle of it, right inside of the shaft! The thing has a "snailshell" exit volume for the air that looks like its name suggest like a snail shell's spiral. Air enters from the top besides the shaft.

A screenshot of a paragraph from an old scientific paper typeset on a fancy typewriter. The text reads (OCR):

It has therefore seemed useful to examine theoretically the flow in an impeller channel, and set down all the possible secondary flows that may combine to form it. Starting from this model, a program of experiments has been devised to determine the presence and magnitude of each of these components, and a series of impellers is being examined.

A test rig has been built on which 6-ft-6-in-diameter impellers may be spun at up to 70 r.p.m. An observer sitting in the middle and rotating with the impeller is able to examine the flow in the channel with smoke and a movie camera, and to measure velocities with a hot-wire anemometer. Photographs of wool tufts in the channel, taken from outside through a window in the compressor casing with a 1-microsecond flash, have added to the understanding of flow direction in the channel.
