What can we learn from 'toxic' brands?
Change alone isn’t enough—how leaders tell the story of that change determines whether it succeeds and sustains, or not.

Drawing on lessons from brands like Apple and Airbnb (the two organisations that first came to mind when walking my dog!), I wanted to explore why 'narrating change' is so essential and how school leaders can use 'narrative as a resource' to rebuild trust, reshape culture, and redefine success.

👋 Sam Fitzpatrick @sam-fitzpatrick.bsky.social · 24/01/2025
Because the story you tell will determine how people experience, interpret, and ultimately support the transformation. Without a compelling narrative, even the best-intentioned efforts can be misunderstood, resisted, or ignored.

What do you do? Well, you know what to do to fix it. And you will. The provocation in this article is that 'just fixing it' isn’t enough. Why?

Cross-training? Flexible staffing pools? On-call specialists? But schools are already doing many of these things. Schools are running the playbook—and they’re running it well. The problem isn’t the execution. It’s the model itself.

This is 'the cover issue,’ and it’s a problem that doesn’t just strain resources—it drains morale. At first glance, the solution seems obvious to outsiders. Other industries face similar challenges—nursing, retail, aviation—so surely there’s something we can borrow.

🚨 The Cover Issue 🚨 Every school leader knows the feeling: the dreaded 7am text announcing more staff absence. It’s a daily reminder of the fragility of a system that demands the impossible—getting the best teachers in front of children every lesson while operating on a shoestring budget.

I agree. For me, a system is a series of working parts working towards a common aim. I think what we've got, right now, is a collection of overlapping systems, all working towards slightly different ends, some more successfully than others.
