The intention is for people to post reviews, so after you look at a few pages, it will prompt you to sign up for the website. The purpose of that is to encourage you to post, or at least thumbs up/down, but reviews can be left anonymously. Send any feedback/bugs you discover: helpforlongcovid.com

RIP U.S. innovation. Between gutting the H-1B program, purging US scientists from civil service, slashing research grants, and disappearing international students off the streets, our government has made a conscious decision to kill America's roll as a global leader in science and innovation.

When mask mandates were enacted to try and save lives, the right screamed about freedom. When mask bans were passed? They celebrated. Because it’s not about freedom. With vaccine mandates, they screamed about autonomy. When vaccines get restricted, they cheer. Because it’s not about autonomy.

Excess retirements can also be driven by Covid/long covid. For example, people near retirement may develop long COVID and therefore just retire rather than trying to work a few more years. Or they may fear COVID infections, and retire to reduce their risk

And unless you spend hours online like I did, talking to people, surfing reddit, hanging out in discord chats, sliding into sick peoples' DMs in the most depressing way possible, you will never know about many of these interventions.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
Unfortunately, a lot of these treatments that are known within the long COVID community don't work, or don't work for everyone. But some of them do for some people some time. (The ganglion block didn't do much for me, but others claim it does.)
120
Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
In the meantime, it doesn't seem like anything will ever change, because research into long COVID is massively underfunded, and many of the trials that are currently running test nonsensical interventions like meditation that won't be effective.
140
Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
I understand the reluctance to intervene - the data is limited. But the alternative is to simply suffer, and maybe never taste or smell anything again. Maybe it comes back in 5 years, or maybe it never does.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
I had to read research and case reports, and compile this all and send it to them. And have multiple appointments and conversations about it before I could actually get it done.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
So instead I went to the Stanford Pain Management Clinic, which performs it in a legitimate hospital setting. I had conversations with them for several months about it - one doctor there wanted to perform, but the other didn't.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
But this didn't seem like a great idea to me, since the procedure involves sticking a large needle deep into your neck.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
I spent the better part of a year researching and trying to find someone reputable to do my ganglion block. If you look online, you can find all sorts of sketchy providers who will do it for cash in the back of random rented medical buildings.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
There I learned about the stellate ganglion block and PRP injections. Later, I did both, but only after I personally spent hours researching and trying to find decent doctors to perform them. My own doctors never suggested any of this to me - I had to figure this all out alone.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
A year later, it had improved maybe 10%, and my sense of taste was also pretty muted, too. For someone who was the president of the Foodies club in college, it really sucked. So I began to do my own research online and found the long COVID community.

I lost it after my first COVID infection in September 2021. At my annual physical a few months later, I told my doctor I still couldn't smell anything. "Hopefully it will come back," she said and moved on to the next topic.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
It almost felt like I was doing something wrong - but really, I was just trying to get my health back. Take my sense of smell, for example.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
I'd hear about some pill or some treatment that worked for someone online. Then, I'd go around doctor shopping until I found someone who was willing to do the procedure for me, or someone who was willing to prescribe the pill.

In the last couple of years, as I was trying to recover, I turned to many of these doctors for treatment. They had some of their own ideas, but more often it was me pitching them things to try based on discussions I had with other long COVID patients online.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
Or, you can turn to alternative medicine or private or concierge doctors. Unfortunately, these people almost never accept insurance, and often charge exorbitant prices. For example, the Center for Complex Diseases charges $2,000 cash for an initial appointment.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
If this happens to you, and if you time, money, and insurance, you can doctor shop, going from one doctor to the next until you get some form of treatment. Eventually, you might run into someone who is willing to prescribe some things.
160
Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
Since there are no approved treatments, the way doctors approach it varies wildly. The most conservative doctors (likely the majority) will give you nothing at all, instead letting you suffer in pain and try to accept whatever is left of your life.

Salvatore Mattera @salvmattera.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
1 in 5 Americans have had lingering symptoms from a COVID infection. Many people recover naturally after a few months, but others are sick for years. If this happens to you, don't expect to get any form of treatment from your doctor. Instead, you'll have to experiment yourself:

Now nearly 2 years later, most of my symptoms have resolved, and through a lot of trial and error and a lot of my own money spent, I did find a handful of doctors I feel comfortable recommending to other patients.

I started to go outside the traditional medical system and talk to all kinds of providers. Some of them were quacks. Some of them seemed like they were just trying to take advantage of the situation. And some were decent.

One of my doctors knew that I had built up a network of other patients, so he actually asked me if I could help his friend who lived in another state find care. That's how dire this situation is.
