Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 4hWhilst being very rare in the Greenland/Islay population, there are at least 6-8 of these lookalike leucistic individuals in the Svalbard/Solway population which are the ones that hit the Northumberland coast in autumn 190
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 08/10/2026With that pale bill and mixed in grey coverts and tertial, surely a 2nd-winter? Be interesting to see what the ringing details say 130
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Another juv Peregrine today, this one caught its own Woodpigeon but lost it immediately to a Buzzard. Pinks everywhere, more Whoopers south, and my first Redwings of the autumn, 1,020 pouring west over the wolds with 9 Jays #yorkshirebirding #vismig #ukbirding 0360
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Very lucky the older one brought the Woodpigeon down right next to me, light behind me, etc! 1151
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The day cleared into a fantastic slice of autumn on the Yorkshire Wolds, with southbound Pinks and Whoopers, a SEO in from high east, and some very showy Peregrines 😍 #loveautumn #yorkshirebirding #ukbirding 1350
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I'd agree with J, and maybe a 7 in the middle? And it will be Norwegian, yes, so send the photos to them and they'll sort it. But it's a Common Gull, not a BHG 010
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The highlight of an hour to kill on the #yorkshirebirding coast this morning was this juv Sab's messing about with 28 Little Gulls 😍 Also a family of 6 Whoopers south, drake Scaup north, 2 Arctic Skuas... #ukbirding #seawatching 1523
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 06/10/2026We had yellow ones in the immigrant waves, and like many others, we're getting pink ones now. Vestals were almost common in the failed silage field behind our house late summer, and I suspect they bred there. Homegrown ones being pink has been noted before: dorsetmoths.co.uk/index_mobile...dorsetmoths.co.uk 010
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Brilliant atmospheric glory just right of the Wrekin, and segments of fogbow too! I wondered where the fog spread to, could just see it pouring into the Severn Valley from my vantage point (the Wrekin is just out of shot to the left) 150
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 06/10/2026...down at the pink Vestal club... 💗 Of an amazing 10 Vestals this morning, 7 were deep pinks, maybe born in the garden?! The other surprise amongst 88/23 was this apparent July Belle! In October. Unless anyone has any more autumnal suggestions?! #teammoth #salopmoths @migrantmothuk.bsky.social 4642
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Love these sorts of things: how many SBS were on the move last night for the three of us to all get one?! 120
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Two county rares amongst a catch of 72/15 was a good result from a cloudy night at #salopobs. Scarce Bordered Straw and Delicate, both lovely moths and immaculate #teammoth #salopmoths @migrantmothuk.bsky.social 0291
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 04/10/2026October getting into its stride at #salopobs. More #nocmig Common Scoters and the first Merveille du Jour last night, then a gorgeous 50spp morning including the first push of 2,580 #vismig Woodpigeons, raptors, Skylarks, Mipits, buntings... #loveautumn #ukbirding ebird.org/checklist/S3... 0260

Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026After such a beautifully clear day, tonight's sky is unsurprisingly magical. So many stars (but still no Redwings). Thanks as ever to @csmaff.bsky.social for the inspiration to step outside and #lookup 1172
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Think you were too quick for the plane, unless it was flying backwards?! 🤔 😉 111
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Fourth garden Clouded Yellow this autumn/year/ever this afternoon, a Wheatear on nextdoor's roof, and a few hirundines still trickling south #loveautumn #salopobs #ukbirding 0251
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Definitely a Mandarin, can see her little white mask there 120
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The shape of the white belly, the mottled flanks, dark underwing and hint of white on the face all point to female Mandarin 120
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Lots on the move at the moment, eg 192 south at Snettisham on Sunday morning! 020
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Happy days! Glad you had a good birthday. What's next?! 100
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Corn Bunting has become more and more regular at #salopobs over the last few years, but this morning's flock of 14 doubled the previous high #ukbirding 1490

Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Third garden record of Clouded Yellow this afternoon, all this month but this was the only one to sit still. Morning #vismig produced 474 Mipits and 2 Swallows #loveautumn #salopobs #ukbirding 0291
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 26/09/2026First one is a second winter with that pale bill, marbled tertials ans messy coverts. Nice bird though 140
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Same here, infrequent in normal years, but I've had up to 6 a night since the solar eclipse. Warm nights around then they could be found in the garden, and several feeding amongst a plethora of Common Wainscots on buddleia and grass flowerheads in the adjacent field by torchlight. Locally bred now?! 010
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Lovely lunar halo out there tonight, first one I've seen for a long time #loveautumn #moon 0180
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Vestals have taken on the baton from SMWs in terms of daily occurrence in the #salopobs mothtrap, although there were two of each today in the sea of Lunar Underwings #salopmoths #teammoth 2432

Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Red sky in the morning, gloriously-sunny-and-freakishly-warm-for-September warning. Migrant Song Thrushes at #salopobs first thing, and another flock of #nocmig Common Scoters overnight #ukbirding 0282
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Odd comment... as you can see, that one nearly hit me. I'd call that close enough?! 100
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 21/09/2026A Delicate (our 3rd, Shropshire's ~8th) was this morning's highlight amongst a sea of 126 Lunar Underwings and the first SMW for a while #salopmoths #teammoth #vc40 0280
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026What a day. One of the best Leach's days for years. 36 in 2.5hrs for me, and reports of lots more all day, wish I could have stayed. A fully-spooned pale adult Pom was the icing on the cake #seawatching #ukbirding #superseabirdsunday 2681
Tom Lowe @saloplarus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026This delightful adult Baird's Sand was a great find for a friend on a farm pond local to where I grew up yesterday, and it did the decent thing by remaining until I was passing today. Only 200m outside #shropshirebirding... #ukbirding 1582
