Fun fact. There is already an Esperanto 2. Even funner fact. Esperanto 2 is well over a hundred years old.

Such a weird post to stumble upon. First, I remember the "I can eat glass" project from slightly before the year 2000, and probably the same year that I learned Esperanto. And then there's this flashy Esperanto graphic with something like three words and one grammatical error on it. Shrug

If you are an Esperanto speaker from Pennsylvania or a surrounding state, you need to act fast. When I first posted this a few days ago there were three cabins available. Now there's one. Bunk and futon space still available directly from me if you want to be there. #esperanto

Easy fix. Just get everybody to accept Esperanto as the second language for everybody.

If you speak or are learning #Esperanto, a weekend event is a great way to take the leap and get to the next level. Space is going fast for this event. Yesterday there were three cabins available and this morning there were two. If Pennsylvania is too far, look for something closer.

Esperanto doesn't want him. Well, I got a ton of views on my video that time he tweeted about Mark Esperanto. But no, we still don't want him.

Simon, if I myself thinking about this whole thing about biking and walking. I was reminded that slightly more than 30 years ago when I was still living with my parents, I went out the front door somewhere just off the east edge of the map, and skated up to Hilton in the North.

And my now adult children grew up with Esperanto, and even today I catch them using it to horse around when they're together.

Believe it or not, I was full-time teaching Eo to "gajni mian panon" for a while. I still teach part-time. This is a slow week but the last couple weeks I had like 6 hours of what I one on one Esperanto lessons a week. We have an event in Pennsylvania in October and a lot of the inquiries are in Eo

It would be interesting to know which would be easier for a typical English speaker to read (with no special instruction.) But I have the advantage that I actually know Esperanto

I speak fluent Esperanto today. My earliest memory of it was also from when I was around 9. I don't remember the name "Esperanto". What I took away from the lesson was this: "Some Polish guy" thought there were too many languages in the world so he invented yet another. 20 years later I started.

The original model absolutely was a way of selling crowd labor for Duolingo's financial benefit. Von Ahn was very open about this. They called it "immersion". Around 2016, they shut down the program because it was not making money. This is why Duolingo has never asked you to translate a text.

What is funny to me is that somebody showed me this article yesterday and said "watch out, Esperanto has competition." I said, "this is not competition, it's advertising". Thanks for showing that my reaction was correct at least in principle.

1. Esperanto never went anywhere. 2. The native speaker joke is only funny until you find out they actually exist.

And shatter is not "fluent in Esperanto". Not even close. His pronunciation in the movie is notorious, and when a copy of the film was found, The Daily Show did a bit about it and Shatner attempted a six word sentence Only three of the words were in Esperanto. 10s of 1000s of people are fluent

Incubus gets a lot of attention because after making it, Shatner became famous, but it was not the first and it was far from the only film made in Esperanto.

P.S. I'll point out that the "longest walk" that I did to the north (red on the previous map) was round trip ... and done barefoot. :-)
100
salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
and for comparison, the red lines are (approximately) the places I've actually walked out my front door and walked to.

Since you're not familiar with the area, here's a visualization. The blue dotted line is a 3 hour 25 minute walk. You could bike to Medina in the same time.
100
salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Heading in the same direction, Google says I could walk just over 9 miles in the same amount of time. A whole days outing wouldn't even put me "out of town" AND I'd have to train for it. The bicycle trip sounds nice. The walk sounds like a slog.

salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
For grins, I checked Google Maps for what I would consider a do-able day trip by bike. Out my front door - then bike out the Erie Canal to Medina NY. I've never done it, but it's just over 40 miles - which I can probably do in a day. According to Google it's 3 hours 25 minutes on the bike.

salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
But I'm wondering if people anywhere in the first world routinely walk out their front door and walk 5, 6, 7 miles in any given direction.
100
salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
I think that's true. And yes, there is a bus, but it doesn't go anywhere. In fact, the farthest east that I have covered from my house was from when I was on jury duty. I took the bus downtown, but if I got out early, there was no bus that came all the way back until evening so I would walk.

salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I think what I'm saying is that I did not see you make any points. You didn't say "there is a great argument for Esperanto but I don't really care to make it right now." You replied to the post saying that it was a great argument.
100
salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I think the other part of it was the realization of how few times I've walked out my front door actually intending to walk anywhere. I walk around. I've walked to the bus stop. I've walked to the corner store. But beyond that, it was just a small number of walks that I remember very distinctly.

How is that an argument for esperanto?
100
salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Have you read the article? This part stands out. "Among those who don't speak a second language, the most common explanation, across most of the countries surveyed, was that they have not felt a need to learn one."
100
salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I don't think you'll find a more sympathetic audience than me, but I don't understand what the argument is you're making. "Europeans don't bother doing something that they find useful so let's give them something the utility of which is much harder to explain"? Kio effective estas la argument?

salivanto.bsky.social @salivanto.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I know what Esperanto is. (Notice my profile picture.) I'm just trying to understand how the initial set of statistics is an argument in favor of it.

Not all that long ago I made a map of all the places that I have walked to by walking out the front door of the place where I've lived from the last 30 years. I feel like I have done a lot of walking in my life, but none of these places were more than a few miles from my front door.

"pedestrian" haha. I was talking to my daughter about all this recently. She was thinking about her time in the UK and places that she walked. And she looked closer at the map, she realized that these "other towns" that she walked to are basically inside the town she started out in
