Always love doing a session for the EMC and this time I get to talk about social media and language change, and why we need to stop uncritically embracing labels like 'TikTok Language' 👌

I was always under the (I think wrong) impression that all academic jobs in the UK had to be posted on jobs.ac.uk. Does anyone know if there is any grounding to this? Or is it simply where a lot of jobs happens to be posted, but not required?

Happy birthday to Mary Shelley, born on this day in 1797 📕 At 18, she began writing Frankenstein, helping to invent a whole genre and giving us one of literature’s most iconic monsters. Not a bad legacy.
Black and white etching portrait of Mary Shelley. Her portrait is set in an oval, she is wearing a black off the shoulder gown. Her hair appears to be a dark brown and falls around her jawbone.

Guaranteed: 1) Black girls will be harassed and demanded to be tested over and over again regardless of how competitive they are. 2) Winners from public schools will be relentlessly hounded by the parents and coaches of losers at private schools, with the goal of making them quit the sport.

Gender Penalty? Linguistic Discrimination and Perceptions of Female Football Commentators | Gender and Language
Abstract This experimental sociolinguistic study investigates implicit attitudes relating to female football commentators. Several high-profile sports-media figures have claimed that women's voices are “too high-pitched” for commentary on men's football, a domain in which traditional, heteronormative gender relations remain especially dominant. With this critique in mind, we conducted a social perception experiment using voices artificially manipulated for pitch to investigate the interaction of pitch and gender stereotypes in this context. Contrary to the male-centred meta-discourse surrounding female commentators, our results show that listeners actually judge female commentators with lower-pitched voices less favourably compared with higher-pitched female voices. Male listeners, in particular, prefer gender-typical voices and male voices generally. These results support previous claims about the influence of stored stereotypes on the social evaluation of speech, how evaluations are dependent upon the specific gendered dynamics of a given domain, and the pervasiveness of a “double-bind” that female commentators are faced with.

When I wrote for The Conversation they were asking for articles on code-switching but when pitched ideas, what they were actually looking for was style-shifting. In non-linguistic areas code-switching has really taken over as the term Not saying it's right, just interesting how prevalent it is
