The Union Street Family Friendly Bikeway just got an upgrade! Two blocks of the Bikeway, which is the one of the most important in the city, now have vertical delineators creating a physical and visual separation between cars and bikes.

The west side of Battle Creek Rd SE between Foxhaven Dr SE and Eastlake Dr SE, alongside Mahonia Crossing, now has a shared use path. With this new grade separated bikeway connecting with the Woodscape Park Pathway, there is now a protected and safe way to travel running about 1/3 of a mile.

Thanks to our advocacy at the Bond Oversight Committee, Salem now has its first “Bike Box” at the intersection of Liberty and Trade. A bike box is a designated area at the front of travel lanes at stop lights that provide bicyclists with a safe and visible way to get ahead of stopped vehicles.

Right-hand turn lanes which cross bike lanes are a dangerous conflict point. Our advocacy prompted the City to put down more green paint at key intersections. This year, City staff painted key intersections increasing the visibility of people who bike.

The City of Salem received grant funding for its first electric mini street sweeper, which will open up new opportunities for safer bike infrastructure, like protected bike lanes. SBV identified the funding opportunity, encouraged the City to apply, and wrote a letter of support.

On Commercial Street SE from Oxford Street SE to Madrona Avenue SE the City installed new buffered bike lanes, a bicycle signal to cross Liberty Road S, and a rapid flashing beacon at Triangle Drive SE. This stretch is a significant step forward on our proposed north-south crosstown corridor.
