Dolphins are one of the smartest animals that I have come across, and like many others, they probably like easier snacks. My latest for @science.org, where I report on a strange, yet effective behavior. My mom liked it, but I've promised myself not to share it with anyone at mealtime again.

An experimental combination vaccine for tetanus and diphtheria remains effective when kept out of the fridge for a year or more, researchers report. www.sciencenews.org/article/experim…

No refrigerator, no problem. This experimental vaccine doesn’t need it.
In early trials, a new vaccine that didn’t require refrigeration still protected against tetanus and diphtheria.

Leukemia (Blood cancer) a month before I turned 17 and a doctor that misdiagnosed me at first. Another one gave up and told my mom I didn't have much time left. But here I am. No matter what.

An experimental oral vaccine may prevent invasive bacterial diarrhea
Shigella causes about 450,000 U.S. infections each year. An experimental oral vaccine protected adults in a small human trial.

'Why do we need vaccines for something that can be prevented with adequate hygiene?' Among the reasons--barely a few shigella bacteria are needed to infect a person, with around half of shigellosis in the U.S. being resistant to at least one antimicrobial drug. I'm proud of all we achieved and will always love this magazine. I'm #opentowork but first I plan to spend time "cultivating [my] own garden."

Today is my last day at Scientific American, which has been sold to LabX media group. For three decades I've led the magazine's coverage of human origins, archaeology, paleontology, animal behavior, ecology, BIRDS. End of an era. Anyway this feels weird to say, but I'm now available for assignments!
