Closing the 4th St bridge to cars and opening it to trams and people would make this deadly intersection safer and make transit more reliable. Let's do it. See this vision in action in this illustration from our blog post on the topic www.safestreetrebel.com/blog/communi...

DIRECT ACTION GETS THE GOODS: Turns out there WAS room for more safety improvements at 4th and Channel St, as the community-installed curb extension has been officially replaced with a separated bike lane. This is a start, but we need MORE here and across the city.

We’re back. Two weeks ago, a driver killed a 2 year-old child at 4th and Channel—the third pedestrian fatality of 2026. Since then, all SFMTA has done was repaint the existing crosswalks for a photo op. So the community took matters into our own hands.

That's not what happened here, though — Engardio's best districts in 2025 were Mar districts in 2022. his best districts in 2022, the most conservative ones, voted to recall him this time around. Mar districts were most likely to vote Yes on K. what different conclusion can we draw here?

Four years ago, SSR was started to make the great highway permanently car-free. Now, sunset dunes is one of SF's most popular parks. Like the embarcadero and central freeway removals, there may be more fights ahead, but we're not going back. 1/3

Zohran's right. flex posts need to go the way of Andrew Cuomo's career "we need bollards, we need to replace these flex delineators... there are New Yorkers who do not bike because they're afraid of their safety... we need to further protect our already protected bike lanes."

Today is the first day of a safer San Francisco. I joined students at New Traditions Elementary School to paint the curb red in order to make pedestrians more visible to drivers. This is called daylighting and it prevents 1 in 3 collisions. It saves lives.
State law mandates that no car may park within 20 feet of a crosswalk. Starting today, the SFMTA will begin painting curbs red across the city so folks know not to park there and to make people safer — starting with school zones like this one. 🛑

we can't afford highways. look at this graphic from the article, transit is just so much more economical
Highway “improvements”, mostly made up of expansion and widening projects, make up the single biggest set of expenditures in WSDOT’s current budget — and are a major source of the budget crisis. (WSDOT)

We’re at Great Highway & Ulloa where a driver killed a 68-year-old pedestrian on Friday. Had this happened 2 months later it’d be a park and she’d be fine. There were no deaths from May 2020-Aug 2021 when it was car-free. Car-free & car-light spaces make cities safe for all.

Take the double left-turn lanes from Alemany down to one lane and shorten the light cycle. Shorten the length of the traffic cycle on Bayshore so that pedestrians don't have to wait so long to cross. Every day the city fails to act is a failure. Our safety can't wait.
0140 14
Safe Street Rebel @safestreetrebel.com · 19/12/2024
In fact, many pedestrians avoid the intersection altogether and cross mid-block just north of it. It makes sense: they don’t have to wait as long to cross, the street is less wide, and the (hostile) intersections are far apart. There's an obvious need for safer crossing options.

There are still very few public details about the crash, but a few things are certain. First, the Bayshore + Industrial intersection is incredibly unsafe by design, with 5 lanes of travel in each direction, a 35mph speed limit, slip lanes, and a short pedestrian crossing cycle.

even better, we should build infrastructure that makes bad driver behavior impossible: car free spaces, concrete protected bike lanes, BOLLARDS!! cheaper and more effective than cops or cameras. please consult the Triangle

- Substitution (Walking, Biking, Transit)
- Engineering (Curbs, Bollards, Barriers)
- Process (Signs, Education, Enforcement)
