We don’t get the little illustration on ours but this scale only goes up to 10. What does it mean when the AQI number is higher than the scale goes? 😬😭😷
Screenshot of AQI

It says:

Very High Health Risk
Scale: Canada (AQHI)
Air quality index is 11, which is similar to yesterday at about this time.

Reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors, especially if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation. At-risk populations, children, and seniors should avoid strenuous activities.

Another pollinator feature, purely by luck! These holes in my yard were made by solitary leaf cutter bees! I can't say which species in particular but I can tell you how cute they are carrying their leaf pieces the size of their body! 🐝🍃✨ #PollinatorSky

Update from my pollinator garden just now: the first batch of monarch caterpillars are starting to leave the garden! The first one didn’t go very far - just from the milkweed to the goldenrod! Incredible timing that I spotted it right before their transformation! 🌱🐛🦋💜✨

Happy Solstice & National Indigenous Peoples Day! ☀️✨ To celebrate, I’ve been working in my pollinator garden. I got the milkweed stems from 2 years ago cut & stems from last year ready for bee habitat. I put the bee cups out🐝🦋🌱✨ #IndigenousPeoplesProtectingBiodiversity #Solstice #SummerSolstice

Garden update: the first monarch caterpillars have hatched! 🐛✨
Extreme close up on a swamp milkweed plant with green leaves and greenish reddish stems. There are three monarch eggs with the "blackhead" appearance, meaning those teeny tiny caterpillars are hatching imminently. There are also two teeny tiny monarch caterpillars that have hatched. One is still working on eating its egg shell.

There are some stylized water elements on the top right and bottom left corners.

There is a big banner of text at the top that says "Mark Carney owes Grassy Narrows an apology". There is text in the bottom that says "#GrassyNarrows".

From my 8-week class, Painting as a Spiritual Practice, this past Feb/March. Let me know in the comments or by DM if you'd be interested in my next class to learn how to paint like this! ✨ #PaintingAsASpiritualPractice #Art #ArtSky #IndigenousArt #EveryoneIsAnArtist #YouCanPaintToo 1/5
A bright and colourful painting featuring a femme presenting, light skinned person with long purple hair made of stars / the universe. She is wearing bright fuchsia glasses, with a pink flower behind an ear and a blue tank top.

She is in the foreground with a huge rainbow that arcs behind her, from bottom left to top right of the image. The rainbow colours from bottom to top are: violet, blue, green, greenish-yellow, yellow, orange, red. She is inside an angular gold polygon, daysky colours inside it and nightsky colours outside of it.

She is also surrounded by flowers, pollinators and sparkles. There are words and phrases within the painting. Some of the words and phrases are different levels of visible as they were added at different points; some being partially covered now by other elements.

The pollinators that arc above her are from left to right: lady bug, monarch, bee, luna moth, two dragonflies.

The art style is reminiscent of impressionism and not complete realism though there are some realistic features and the artist thinks she bears a resemblance to herself.

I got an early start on my garden last weekend! We’ve had some frost too so I’m living on the edge 😅 These poor plants were outgrowing their pots. I had started them too soon since I was antsy for spring. Not pictured: impatiens, sweetgrass, traditional Aztec tobacco & Hindu Kush + 🌱✨ #GardenSky
A raised garden bed with 6 tomato plants spread out: 2 beefsteak, 2 Manitoba and 2 Bonny Best. Centred and offset between them are 2 pepper plants: 1 ring of fire and 1 long red cayenne. There are some teeny basil plants between them in this bed and a marigold. There's a summer dance cucumber on one end and a tender green cucumber on the other end.A raised garden bed. In the half farthest from the camera, it looks empty except for some labels. Carrots and beets have been planted there in rows.

The nearest half, divided in half again perpendicular to the camera, has nasturtium in the very centre of the bed, then a little patch of asparagus, another of leeks, another of celery, then some still empty space.A raised garden bed with the three sisters in the far half but you can only see the squash. Beans and corn have been planted though.

The near half has peas on one side and still some empty space.Milkweed shoots coming up between the stems from last year and the grass.

- The Premier, Ministers and their offices will all be excluded from the FOl system.
- This applies to all existing requests
- Only civil servants can be FOl'd
- The government is extending the response timeline from 30 calendar days to 45 business days.

“The result was a series of nutrition experiments conducted on nearly 1,000 children in six residential schools between 1948 and 1952. These included a double-blind, randomized experiment examining of the effects of nutrition supplements on children showing clinical signs of vitamin C deficiency, with half of the students receiving placebos and the other half receiving vitamin tablets; an examination of the impact of an experimental fortified flour mixture that included ground bonemeal, among other things, at St. Mary's School in Kenora, Ontario; and an examination of the effects of both inadequate and adequate milk consumption on a population of children with clinical signs of riboflavin deficiency at the Alberni School in British Columbia.”

Photo of Cyn who has long dark brown hair over her shoulder. She’s wearing fuchsia coloured eye glasses, a black Zimi mask, black hoodie from Decolonial Clothing with the floral Land Back motif, rainbow kuffiyeh from Hirbawi, standing beside the poster she painted the says “Draw The Line for Queer Rights” in big bold letters and below in cursive says “Trans rights are human rights”. The poster also features a beautiful person whose hair has shades of carmine, pink and turquoise. Their beard is pink. They’re wearing a neon green tank top, lots of colourful ribbons around their neck and Pride coloured earrings.

In the background you can also see a poster for Migrants rights, a poster that says “What will you draw the line for?” And a small sign on the ground that says “respect existence or expect resistance”.Photo of some sidewalk art that says “Action for people, for peace, for planet”.

Poster:

Mass Death is Imminent in Gaza

The people of Gaza are now facing IPC
Phase 5 - the final stage of famine.

Children are wasting away from severe malnutrition.

Adults are suffering organ failure, brain injury, and sudden cardiac death.
This is not a warning — it's happening now.
Without urgent intervention, mass death is inevitable.
We are talking about days - not weeks.

Escalation week:
* Daily protests, everywhere
* Disruption, not business as usual
* Relentless pressure until aid is allowed in
* Global mobilization - now, not later

The world must not look away while Gaza starves.

There’s a handful of bee cups in it.

Note: I sprinkled these clean, dried broken egg shells around the bases of my plants before doing more reading to know that it’s not actually that useful to keep pests off the plants. It will eventually break down into calcium for the garden.

Resharing with #AltText New research finds limiting oil & gas development in Canada won’t harm the sector—in fact it could protect its value. "With global oil & gas demand heading towards a permanent decline, Canada should limit expansion to lower economic risks." Click through for the link ⬇️
Infographic from IISD

Text above the graph says “Expanding Canadian oil and gas production could reduce the value of the industry.”

Value of the industry noted on the chart in $USD billions between 2025 and 2040 range is from -100 to 500 billion.

The graph shows the change in value of the Canadas fossil fuel industry under three climate scenarios. For each scenario, a value is listed for if the industry stops new fuels, and if it continues to expand oil and gas fields.

For the STEPS scenario, the industry would be worth just over $400 billion USD if its stops producing new fields, but under $400 billion USD if it continues.

Under the APS scenario, the industry value would drop from $150 billion USD to $100billion.

Under the NZE scenario, it would drop from around $50billion to -$50 billion.

The text at the bottom of the graph says “The government should instead boost clean industries that are better suited to a changing global economy.”

The IISD logo is in the bottom left.

They’ve started to hatch! 🐛🦋 This monarch caterpillar hatched yesterday probably. I counted 3 in the garden so far 💜💕✨
Photo of a milkweed plant in my garden. Three quarters of the frame features a common milkweed plant. I’m holding a leaf with a day or two old monarch caterpillar on it. It’s towards the centre of the plant and the area it has been chewing on has some milk sap coming out of it (hence the name “milkweed”).

Yesterday, garden season opened at my house! It was THE day because before June 6 there’s still risk of frost here & then I was expecting it to rain all day today & off & on through this coming week. #AnemkiWiikwedong #ThunderBay #TBay #Garden #Pollinators #IndigenousPeopleProtectingBiodiversity
Photo of my pollinator garden featuring swamp milkweed, common milkweed, chamomile, daisies, volunteer purple pansies with yellow centres in the middle ground of the photo. The chamomile is almost ready to show some yellow. The milkweeds are only about 8 inches tall so far. They will eventually reach a height of about 3 feet.

The is one bee cup pictured. It's a tiny round light green shape in this image, almost right in the centre.

Foreground is just grass and the background features a fence. Among the plants are last year's milkweed stems which are much taller and continue out of frame and they make perfect little hiding places for certain pollinators to overwinter. Close up photo of one of my three raised garden beds. This one features the seedlings which were planted yesterday: tomatoes, peppers, basil, thyme and marigold in the soil. I also planted some nasturtium seeds between these plants but it will take a while to see them grow.

Among the plants here are also some bee cups which hold about a teaspoon of water for thirsty pollinators. They don't hold enough water for mosquitos to breed and because it's such a small amount of water, it is safer for pollinators to drink but it evaporates quickly so one must fill the bee cups every morning (if it hasn't rained).

These bee cups have a UV glaze on them that makes them look like flowers to pollinators thereby becoming an inviting place to get a drink. They are made from porcelain and won't leach harmful chemicals into the water for the pollinators nor the soil where one's food might be growing.

There are many impersonators who don't take such care with their work so buy only authentic bee cups or look up how to make a pollinator watering station with marbles in a low dish if you want to help thirsty pollinators.

We thought she would fly away soon, so we decided to move her to a hidden, protected place to prevent any of the gallery visitors from disturbing her.
This is a photo of me holding the little brown bat. I'm wearing my regular PPE (well fitted respirator, white, and stoggles) and a fresh pair of gloves, green, to protect myself and the little bat while we moved her. I'm wearing a hot pink top and a grey blazer. In the background is a large outdoor art sculpture by Ahmoo Angeconeb, some greenery, the road, and part of a car. This is a close up photo of the little brown bat. Her mouth is open and her tiny teeth are looking very sharp! My green gloves, hot pink top and grey blazer are in the background.

Bat Appreciation Day 🧵💜✨ One day in 2022, when I was working at the art gallery, there was a little brown bat sleeping on the concrete right in front of the main doors! #BatAppreciationDay #AnemkiWiikwedong #ThunderBay #TBay
Close up photo of a little brown bat sleeping on the concrete. Her body is light brown, her wings, ears and face are all darker. There are sticks and pine cones surrounding her as the first person on the scene wanted to ensure that no one accidentally stepped on her. In the background is the building and some greenery.

Time to start the day! No protein shake is complete without rainbows 🌈 ✨
Photo of a large smoothie in a mason jar. The smoothie is mostly purple with dark flecks. There is a rainbow being projected onto the side of the mason jar.

Background is my brown patterned counter top and green, brown, beige tiled backsplash with blurry cameos from my blender, kettle and honey.

Biboon! It is winter! ❄️ Yesterday I sprinkled my fall seeds in that round spot of soil & around my milkweed plants. I tried to time it right before the snow to prevent squirrels from eating ALL of them lol. I’d say I timed it perfectly! 😅 #AnemkiWiikwedong #ThunderBay #TBay #FallGardening #Winter

I got behind in posting my garden updates. Here’s my top 4 images from the end of the summer 🌱✨ I’d say my first veggie garden was a success! I learned a lot! Excited for next year! #AnemkiWiikwedong #ThunderBay #TBay #BeginnerGardener #Gardening
Wide angle shot of the milkweed area in my yard. Its tall, long skinny leaves are green and the flowers are dark and light pink at the tops of the plants. There’s an orange and black monarch on one of the plants. The fence with a hanging potted plant is in the background.A close up of a monarch on the yellow goldenrod flowers, with a bee caught midflight directly to the left. Green goldenrod leaves in the background.A wide angle shot of my three raised veggie beds with the garden covers to keep the squirrels out. The veggies reached the top of the covers in some spots! Some colourful flowers in the beds are visible too.My tiny harvest! Some russet and golden potatoes, some tiny beets and carrots, all on a paper towel on my kitchen counter. Not pictured are all the other things I ate: prolific green beans, peas, tomatoes and a handful of strawberries.

My little buddy Bette turned 10 last week! She even humoured me by wearing the hat I made her for a whole second 😂💜✨ My heart ❤️
Collage of 6 photos featuring a brownish grey tabby cat with an orange nose and white chin and bright green eyes.

Top left: Bette cuddling on the couch with her blankets and kuffiyeh. Top middle: me, a white passing Anishnaabekwe with my dark hair pulled back, wearing pink glasses, holding Bette as she head butts my face. Top right: Bette laying on her back, all stretched out on a French provincial sofa, reaching one paw to the camera.

Bottom left: a blurry glimpse of Bette wearing the hat, on my very cluttered table, sticking her tongue out. Bottom middle: an unimpressed Bette on the table in front of my laptop, wearing the hat. Bottom right: Bette cuddled on a blanket on the sofa, holding the blanket and lifting her head up towards the camera, giving a loving smile.

It was a pretty stressful day at the hospital. Specialists in my immediate future. I am so grateful to be home now. This huge double rainbow that greeted me as I walked out has got to be a good sign. 🙏🏻🌈💜✨ #TwoSpirit #ListenToYourHeart #Rainbow #DoubleRainbow #ChiMiigwetchGitchiManitou
Part of the hospital, angular, metal beams are sort of pointing up and to the right respectively, meeting in almost a triangle and some trees. There is a dark sky and TWO huge rainbows that crossed the entire sky.Part of the hospital, angular, metal beams are sort of pointing up and to the right respectively, meeting in almost a triangle and some trees. My face filling most of the frame. I’m wearing my PPE: respirator and eye protection. A very relieved but exhausted look on my face.
