A few years back we were all amazed at AI-generated art; whereas today the vast majority of it feels cheap, generic, and uncool. And we detect it pretty easily. I wonder if AI coding will follow a similar trajectory. Will we look back at over-complicated mid-2026 AI slop apps the same way?

@tolin.ski just a heads up that the State of Devs survey results are now available 2026.stateofdevs.com/en-US/ some of the questions were directly inspired by your own work on the topic of AI & developer mental state!

so apparently YouTube Music has decided that I'm really into rappers who hate vowels and push the distortion slider to 11, and I'm not sure how I feel about it…

Forgot to mention, you access the correlations view through this grid icon:

These correlations are generated automatically for every single question by the way. It's a great way to explore the data and find new patterns.

Introducing the State of Devs Correlation Spectrum Here we can see that having no interest in joining a union is moderately correlated with: - Being worried about the erosion of traditional values - Being straight - Feeling curious about tech. Explore the data: 2026.stateofdevs.com/en-US/

This is barely 10% of the entire survey results, so make sure to go check out the full report! And reshare this post if you want to help shine a light on matters that are often swept under the rug in the developer community. 2026.stateofdevs.com/en-US/

Favorite video games on the other hand were a bit more balanced, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Minecraft taking the lead.

To finish on a lighter note, hobbies and media. The survey also asked about favorite books, and Dungeon Crawler Carl and Project Hail Mary were the two clear winners.

When asked to describe how they feel about the tech industry, respondents mostly shared negative emotions such as exhaustion and disillusionment. Although curiosity was also frequently cited, and correlated with feeling more positively about AI.

Respondents who identify as leaning more left-wing feel more confortable sharing their political views in a professional context, and so do respondents in most European countries compared to the rest of the world.
110
Sacha Greif @sachagreif.com · 28/09/2026
The survey audience self-reported as left-wing, with the U.S. being the most left-wing country, while India was the most right-wing.

Next up: worldview and politics. The thing developers worry about the most right now is still climate change, but economic inequality made big gains. On the other hand, the U.S. stands out for ranking rising authoritarianism first.
120
Sacha Greif @sachagreif.com · 28/09/2026
Similarly, only 23% of respondents agreed that AI had had a positive impact on their mental state.
111
Sacha Greif @sachagreif.com · 28/09/2026
Despite the reliance on AI, respondents remain skeptical of AI overall, with a split down the middle in terms of median sentiment, and only 3% of respondents having a 100% positive view of the technology.

On to AI. The survey dedicated a whole section to the topic, and it's clear that most people rely on it in some way for the vast majority of their code today.

Speaking of burnout, respondents selected 4.5 items on average when asked about various burnout symptoms such as reduced motivation or feeling cynical about their work.

Sacha Greif @sachagreif.com · 28/09/2026
First, workplace and career. The top workplace issues developers face are all management-related: bad management, burnout, work-life balance, boredom… Harassment and discrimination are thankfully fairly low on the list.

Where are you on the AI dev lifecycle? "I don't need AI to do my job" ↓ "I'll just use AI to code a few things" ↓ "It's fine as long as I review everything" ↓ "Actually, the AI's code is better" ← I'm here ↓ "I should never have to look at code anyway" ↓ "Programming languages are obsolete"

Saying “there’s a 10% chance AI will wipe out humanity” is like saying “there’s a 10% chance this house fire will wipe out the town”. It probably won’t happen, but in the meantime you should probably still put the fire out…

You’ll miss publishers when they’re gone
Ever since Piccalilli started to get traction, I’ve always seen CSS-Tricks, Smashing Magazine and A List Apart (among others) as peers. We all help each other behind the scenes and importantly, back each other. When CSS-Tricks was initially acquired by DigitalOcean, I was really happy for Chris. The work that he’d put into that publication…

You should hire Charli based on how cool she is alone. But if that's not enough she is also a very accomplished developer.

Interesting that while the U.S. still offers the highest salaries right now, when ranking countries by how many developers have seen their salaries *increase* over the past year, it's not even in the top 10. Time to move to Europe…?

call-out culture works great when you're the dominant force and use it to force "dissidents" to fall back into rank; but people have not realized yet that progressives are *not* the dominant force in tech anymore, and that this strategy is just no longer viable
120
Sacha Greif @sachagreif.com · 14/09/2026
true, but we should (imo) try and pull the companies at the edge of the cesspool out of it and back to the progressive side, not drive them further into it by over-dramatizing relatively (compared to everything that's going on) minor infractions

This whole controversy is honestly ridiculous when you have OpenAI's Greg Brockman literally donating to Trump directly, not to mention the entire tech community still using Elon's X. Feels like people are just going after smaller companies (1Password) because they make easier targets…

Unexpected benefit of AI-assisted coding #57: it always feels nice to get a "job well done" pat on the back, and it doesn't really matter that it's coming from an LLM. I suspect this also plays a big role in forming a strong emotional dependency on AI in the workplace.

The effort required to code anything used to act as a filter against implementing low-utility features. With AI, I find myself going down rabbit holes and coding things that would have never seen the light of day before. Which on one hands *feels* very productive, but what is the actual ROI…?

Kinda related: Coding agents are an absolute superpower for people with ADHD. I have like 5 ideas per minute, and now I can just throw each one into a separate thread and keep going. Before that, I could hardly finish anything without medication.

Unexpected benefit of AI-assisted coding: I now have a way to remember the current status of any sub-task I'm working on, either by looking at the logs or asking the agent directly. Previously, the first 10 minutes of any work session was just trying to remember what the hell I'd been doing.
