I’m not a fan of how we make fun of the appearance (age, body shape) of those we disagree with on political, social or religious vectors. Elon and Trump are terrible people but we either support body positivity and anti-ageist views or we don’t. We cannot cherry pick when our ideals apply.

I don’t think we should ever revel in the misery of others. If only there were a scripture, some version of which was embraced by the world’s 3 largest religions to offer guidance on how we should treat our neighbor and reject avarice and self interest. That would be quite the holy volume!

At times i thought The Monkey was a real movie and then it would do something so ridiculous that i would rapidly recede from any such analysis and say in my best midwestern dad voice, “now hold on a second, Osgood, honey. Are we sure that’s how we want to play that?” And the answer was always yes.

Closing in on the final instrumental arrangement for my next collab with Smile Thieves. It’s a cover song but one that has deep personal history for me. Excited to record vocals for it. I’ve been wanting to make this for 20 years. Early Spring release with a music vid is the goal right now.

The Brutalist is one of those films you have the pleasure of decoding once it’s finished. So many scenes, bits of dialogue, shot compositions suddenly reveal hidden meaning and depth given the film’s latter half. It’s not like a mystery, more like a meditation.

Sorry, BlueSky. I liked Emilia Perez a lot. The music is freaking incredible. Because of course it is. It’s written by Camille, that indie art pop queen, and her songwriting partner, husband. I thought the performances were great too. Especially Zoe Saldana as the most catless cat lady ever on film.

Revisiting Fire Walk With Me and it feels less a story about the supernatural now. That’s just how it’s presented. To me it’s about a girl that suffered horrible abuse and the question of whether she will become what Leland made her or die an innocent wronged. As she says, “i’m gone, long gone.”

David Lynch meant a lot to me. Twin Peaks was, for many years, a good way to find out who the cool kids were. Also my grandfather and i bonded over A Straight Story which very closely echoes his own relationship with his estranged brother and he never stopped for thanking me for recommending it.

Watching the Faculty with my daughter and she couldn’t get over the little conical cups the teachers drank out of in the faculty lounge. She giddily exclaimed, “look at how tiny they are! WHY!” And dear reader, i’ve been seeing these things for decades and i never realized how stupid they look.

Seriously though Claudia’s final line in Dragon Prince Book 7 broke my heart. I’ve read interpretations that see it as hopeful but i recognize that tone. She’s delusional and looking to place the blame on everything but herself for all the losses she’s suffered. “I’m nice. I’m still me”

The online film community was dead on about Red Rooms. I don’t think i’ve felt as thrown off balance by a film this year. There is one scene, which must not be spoiled, that made me lurch forward and twisted up my brain like spaghetti on a fork. Strange powerful, unpredictable film.

Finally watched all of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. A series that is arguably better than the Jurassic World films with which it shares a universe. This is a Bumpy stan account now. Also Jenna Ortega as Brooklynn might be my favorite “teen” vocal performance of all time?

Watching Red Rooms and in 2025 i wish for the level of brass it takes to start a film with a 20 minute mostly static courtroom scene without a hint of melodrama.

My advice for a New Year’s resolution is to walk away from Gacha games. I tried my first last year and i could feel its hooks in me. I dropped about $50 on this “free” game because many of its systems are PTW and built to keep you pulling. I got my money’s worth but if i kept on I’d spend A LOT more
