Jews in the Eternal City Soundings in a 2000-Year History
Thomas Bolin, Providence College Scholar-in-Residence in Jewish Studies and Jewish-Christian Relations

For at least two thousand years, Jews have lived in Rome continuously alongside Christians. This shared history occupies an important place in Jewish-Christian relations. This lecture examines specific moments in that history, focusing on the lives of individual Roman Jews. Their stories, in both triumph and tragedy, show us a resilient and resourceful community living at the center of the Catholic world.

If you are a person with a disability and require an assistive device, service, or other accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Central Reservations Manager (401-865-1040); M-F 8:30a.m. – 4:30p.m.) well in advance of this event.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

The US Church needs to be cautious so as not to ascribe American exceptionalism to the Pope. When Leo was asked about being the first pontiff from the US, he replied quickly: “I am the Pope, who happens to be an American.” Leo is the Pope for the global Church, not just the US.

We mourn the passing of Judith Banki, a pioneer in the field of Jewish-Christian relations. Her work with the @ajcglobal.bsky.social in the 1960s contributed to the movement that resulted Nostra Aetate, one of the last living individuals directly connected to this historic document. Eternal rest.
Twitter post by the American Jewish Committee:

text: We mourn the passing this week of Judith Herschcopf Banki at age 98, a pioneer in Christian-Jewish relations over six decades, who began her illustrious career at AJC Interreligious Affairs throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

Judy played a critical role in the shaping and reception of Nostra Aetate, the 1965 Catholic document which transformed Catholic-Jewish relations. She continued for several decades at the @TanenbaumCenter for Interreligious Understanding as a scholar advocate within the worldwide community of interreligious leaders, undimmed by any limitations of age.

We were honored to sing Judy’s praises and introduce her to new generations of leaders as AJC NY celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of Nostra Aetate in 2025.

Judy leaves a legacy of admirers who learned the interreligious work through her example. We extend condolences to her family and to all of us whom she treated like family. May the memory of Judith Hershcopf Banki be for a blessing.

(RNS) - When she was six years old and watching the funeral of Pope John XXIII on TV, Amy-Jill Levine learned from her mother that the pope was "a friend to the Jews."

Levine told her mother she wanted to be pope.
That wasn't to be. But last month, she received a unique honor, and perhaps the next best thing:
Levine was named president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, the first Jewish scholar to hold the title.
