Some good vibes for your weekend: Two of my closest friends visited the Fleet Science Center (San Diego, CA) and sent this selfie. An honor to showcase and celebrate LGBTQ+ representation in the sciences. Especially in these times. All 19 scientists featured: www.fleetscience.org/experiences/...

Exciting news! We’re thrilled to announce that tapir Yuna gave birth to a rare and endangered Malayan tapir calf Sunday night. The newborn, covered in distinctive white spots and stripes resembling a fuzzy walking watermelon, is only the second tapir born in our 120-year history.

Amplify the folks and organizations doing right. #SICB was one of the first conferences I attended as a grad student (2015). Incredibly inclusive & great #science. Heard a talk on HGT between bacteria and brown recluse, sparking my interest in venom microbes. Thank you for your consistent advocacy.

Someone, who used to know better, told me today that it’s patriotic to support the president even if you don’t always agree. This is the excuse being used by many to explain their acquiescence. Actually, this is what a patriot is: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/u...

Plants and animals that gain protection by US law owe much more to studies published in small, specialist journals than they do to those published in prestigious titles go.nature.com/3WDV4UP

Want to get a species protected? Publish in a small, niche journal
Studies are more likely to influence conservation law if they are published in specialist journals — but researchers worry that their true impact is being ignored in hiring and promotion decisions.

Auschwitz Memorial @auschwitzmemorial.bsky.social · 27/01/2025
Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.
A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Many scientists were impacted during the first term. They were immigrants. They were Black. They were Muslims. They were queer,... Science is, and has always been, political. Maybe now all scientists agree. "...Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me." - Niemöller
