I'm considering the idea that the Democrat party in USA is more of a pawl rather than a counterweight. what we are taught is that opposition parties act as a counterweight, and we expect Democrats to undo authoritarian drift. but time after time we don't see this.

1/ Using the argument that Dobbs could redefine the federal gov't stance on abortion, we could apply the same to the current state of 4th amendment shenanigans. As I understand it: before the 1980s (?) various states had random ad hoc interpreations of the 4th amendment.

Congress will impeach based on screwing with the election process but they won't impeach based on starting a war with Denmark and Greenland why? because if you can impeach a president for starting a war the next time a D president did it they will be impeached. gotta keep the status quo
