The story’s still just as cheesy as the original, and like every other adaptation, it has to stretch and flesh things out. The source material has always been thin. it’s not some deep, complex tale.

That’s why the new Superman stuff hits different. He looks… broken. And honestly? So are we. Just like in the ’70s, we’re craving hope again. But this time, Superman doesn’t just need to believe he can fly… we do. The world doesn’t just need him anymore. It needs us to be super, too.

The mid ‘90s/ 2000s didn’t really know what to do with him. Lois & Clark, Smallville, they focused more on the man behind the cape. Superman Returns asked if we even needed him anymore. And post-9/11, he mirrored our own identity crisis: nostalgic, unsure, and feeling kind of alone in a loud world.

By the ’70s, culture was more cynical. We didn’t just want Superman—we needed to believe he could fly. That’s what made Superman ’78 so special. In the ‘80s, he was back to being powerful again. But as the world got grittier, even Superman couldn’t escape it. Then in the ‘90s… they killed him.

In the ’40s, joined the war effort, just like the U.S. By the ’50s, during the space race, his stories leaned sci-fi: mad scientists, aliens, robots. The Super fam grew: Supergirl, Superboy, even Krypto. But by the end of that era, things felt kinda campy. Audiences wanted something more grounded.

I’ve been thinking about how Superman has always reflected the vibe of America. When he showed up in the ’30s, he felt like an immigrant hero, fighting corrupt landlords, greedy bankers, and standing up for the little guy. He had that Depression era, everyday-people energy.

Had a beautiful chat with my oldest aunt (b. 1932), a bold, cause-driven woman. She’s lived through the Depression, wars, McCarthyism, & the Civil Rights era, but says today’s world is the first time she’s afraid to share her views with neighbors because of too many broken norms and no shared trust.

I’ve mostly stayed out of the Snow White discourse, but I have to say—the Queen was always stunning in the original story and Disney film. Her true ugliness was internal and only showed outwardly when she transformed into the old hag with apples. Gal Gadot’s casting makes perfect sense.

Black activists are urging folks to disengage from MAGA completely—no arguments, no reactions. The fear is that “47” wants to provoke riots as a pretext for martial law. Feels like a throwback to the civil rights era when leaders stressed composure to avoid being painted as aggressive.

That said, with Democrats in power, real change is necessary. The focus should be on progress—centering the protest on that while simultaneously strengthening, not dismissing, essential social services like Medicaid, Social Security, universal healthcare, education, and student loan forgiveness.
