St. David's United Church - Leduc, Alberta

St. David's United Church Offers Prayers For Serenity In A Time Of Decision Making

In the lead up to the October 19, 2026 referendum, St. David's United Church in Leduc, Alberta, will be hosting silent prayer gatherings every evening from October 1 to 18.

"The purpose for the meetings is not to have a discussion on any of the ten referendum questions. The purpose is not to tell anyone how to vote. It is, instead, meant to allow people to reflect, inwardly, in community. It is also for people for whom the referendum is causing anxiety, confusion, worry for what the referendum iteself means, and what will come next, whatever the outcome on any of the questions," said Rev. Leigh Sinclair, pastor at St. David's.

"Our faith community has chosen to offer a prayerful and safe space in the lead up to the referendum. People are in need of comfort and encouragement, and we wanted the community at large to know that they are not alone."

"Besides the need for solace in a troubling time, people may also take this time to consider how it is they will be voting, and for what reasons. We want to offer our space for folks to consider their Treaty responsibilities and our belief in loving all neighbours, not just some."

"The silent prayer eventings, therefore, are to allow not only for a place for calm in the storm, but also to invite the public to reflect upon and discern what the meaning of each vote will be, how best to live in community, and how to be a neighbour to one another."

The silent prayer gatherings will be held in the sanctuary at St. David's United Church, 4614 48 Street, Leduc, Alberta, October 1 to 18, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

"such action as it deems necessary" lot of off ramps in the NATO treaty, not the least being Article 7, which says we don't have to violate our UN obligations. what if a Prime Minister with courage said "it's actually necessary not to escalate things, we're assisting by sitting on our damn thumbs"
Article 5

The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Artile 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can even passibely take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!"

I must say that was a real shot in the arm. I‘m not sure I’ve ever seen or heard a leader on the national stage like this before, and it left us tremendously hopeful for the future. I feel like we’re on the verge of something big and good, can’t remember the last time I felt that. Go @avilewis.ca !

I don't go onto Facebook very often anymore, but this greeted me today: Strombo talking with Kevin Martin of The Lobby, "the last video store" Kevin is great. The Lobby is great. @strombo.bsky.social is great.
Facebook post from George Stroumboulopoulos:

"In Edmonton, you will find one of the last video stores in this country.

The Lobby is run by Kevin Martin. And one of my fave moments of this past year (and there were a lot), was running into Kevin and getting his take on the genre films made in Canada (see below for some of Kevin recommends for ones coming out of Alberta).

All part of the Stories That Made Us - Episode 1 up now on YouTube [link]

Kevin on the movies made in Alberta:
'One of the craziest movies ever filmed in Edmonton. West Edmonton Mall water park, to be exact. Legend Sammo Hung in Paper Marriage. Yup, they f@ck up the water park and pirate ship! beauty.

also...
Prom night 2: Hello Mary Lou
Tucke and Dale Vs Evil
Rad
Unforgiven
Paper Marraige

Movies taking palce in Alberta that I freaking love:
Hard Core Logo
Clive Barker's Nightbreed

And let us not forget the comic childhood home of Clark Kent in Donner's Superman was indeed Alberta, including all of Superman III being filmed in Calgary, but we don't talk about that one

From bad Patrick Swayze Christmas movies to Chevy Chase in snow Day, we have had rough cinema made here, but then again, we also have guilty pleasure Bill Goldberg as a killed Santa in Santa Slay here too.

As a genre film fan, I could praise all the classic westerns shot here, but let's be honest...it's good to be weird, and the world of B Movie cinema will always be king"

(continued)(continued from last screen shot)

"PS. Honourable mention to the underrated beauty, The Edge with Baldwin, Hopkins, and that bear.

And no Alberta vibe would be complete without Fubar. If the EAst Coast has the Trailer Park Boys, we've got the Fubar boys. Stereotype? Maybe. Funny as hell. You goddamn right.

And of course, legendary Alberta-born director Tommy Chong. Yup. Dude directed every Cheech and Chong flick after the original

thanks Kevin!

Municipal election day in Alberta! For City of Leduc Mayor, I have not been shy about my endorsement of Lars Hansen.
Councillor Ryan Pollard
035m • 0

Today's the day everyone! The day you get your say in who runs your municipality for the next four years!

It's well known of course that I am not running again, so don't bother looking for my name on the ballot

You have your work cut out for you in making choices for councillors, with so many names on the ballot. I'm not going to weigh in on that race, but I will say that the thing I heard time and again from residents is that if you pay attention, you can tell who is really serious about it, knows what the job is about, and who has worked hard to earn your trust. Every candidate, I have observed, has strenths and weaknesses (this was no less true for me when I ran). I mean that.
Reward the people who have shown you that they have what it takes.

In terms of the mayoral race, I have not been shy about whom I endorse. I have nothing bad I will say about the other candidates, but I have much to say about the qualifications of Elect Lars Hansen for Mayor.Lars is a man I've known for many years, before either of us were polticians. He's always been serious, informed, intelligent, and had views about what was going well in the world and what was not. More to the point, he's always had a vision for making the world a better place, and it was my extreme privilege to bear witness to him putting that vision into action. He knows what's up. He knows how to make things happen. He works hard and accomplishes much.

He is the choice for Mayor of Leduc.
Lars, my dear friend, I pray for you and I pray for our City. Go make it happen buddy.
Elect Lars Hansen for Mayor

We were at the Alberta legislature today to show support for teachers as the largest strike in Alberta history is about to begin. Shannon is a CUPE member and she just went through this last spring. A lot of great signs, leave it to a teacher to use the future perfect tense

To keep up we need 6,400 more teachers

And a lot more to fix the situation

LARS HANSEN FOR MAYORlarshansenleduc Thanks for the endorsement, Ryan!

"Lars Hansen is, as a leader, beyond comparison. I have never in my life met someone more suited to this role. He stands alone in this community as possessing the intelligence, vision, and experience required to deliver the good governance our citizens need and deserve. I love this monument to Canadian veterans of the Mackenzie-Papineau Regiment/International Brigades I saw in Victoria, BC a couple of years back.
A statue of a woman wearing a crown, a wreath in one hand and a dove in the other. Plaque from the memorial, reads in part:

“THE MACKENZIE PAPINEAU BATTALION OF THE INTERNATIONAL BRIGADES
SPANISH CIVIL WAR 1936-1939

This monument commemorates the gallant men and women of British Columbia and Canada who offered cheir lives to defend che principles of democracy and served as the Mackenzie-Papincau Battalion of the International Brigades in defence of the Republic of Spain..

In July 1936, the opening shots of the Second World War were fired in Spain. Insurgent forces led by General Franco staged a rebellion to crush the democratically clected Government of the Spanish Republic. This treason was met with armed resistance by che people of Spain who rose to defend che New Republic. Thus the Spanish Civil War had begun which pitted the democracy embodied in che Spanish Republic against the fascism of the insurgent forces led by Franco, whose allies were the fascist regimes of Hitler and Mussolini.:
Against a backdrop of appeasement of Hitler, the policy of Non-Intervention, and arms embargoes against the Republic rendering it virtually defenseless, volunteers from 53 countries - who formed the International Brigades - went to Spain co defend democracy and resist the spread of fascism.

…

Over 600 volunteers in the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion were killed in Spain. These brave individuals are forever part of the earth of Spain. Many of the survivors of the Battalion who returned to Canada in 1939 endeavoured to join and did join the Canadian forces to fight with the Alfies in World War Il, which began six months later. Once again, they were fighting fascism. The fascist alliance of the Axis Powers was finally defeated in 1945.

NO PASARAN”
