Today, I resigned as Vice Chair of the ODP Pride Caucus. The state party expects us to be a sales team, censoring our voices when we beg candidates not to trade on trans lives. I am still a Democrat, but I will not value party approval over true, defiant advocacy. Full text below. 👇
Part 1 of an open letter of resignation by Arienne Childrey, stepping down as Vice Chair and member of the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) Pride Caucus. She states that party leadership treats the caucus as a recruitment and sales team rather than a representative body. She cites an incident where the ODP censored and denied permission for the caucus to post a letter by two trans leaders addressing harmful comments made by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. The State Party Chair reportedly called the letter an "unwelcome distraction," which Childrey notes demonstrates how little party leadership values the voices and dignity of LGBTQ+ Democrats.
Since that decision, every Caucus plan, every potential post, and every path forward has been filtered through a lens of strict compliance and ODP approval. That may very well be the party's rule, but following those rules right now is a dereliction of our duty to the LGBTQ+ community.

For me, any rule that silences advocacy for the trans community during this time is an unjust rule, and I see no obligation to follow it. In alignment with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail:

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”

We are living in incredibly dangerous times for the trans community. We are in an era where the GOP has so thoroughly weaponized trans lives that even some formerly self-professing allies within our own party have fallen prey to the rhetoric. Looking at the national trend towards Democratic anti-trans triangulation, as well as our own internal conversations, it is clear to me that this shift is much more than a simple coincidence.

We have to speak up—loudly, strongly, and unapologetically—or I fear what our 2028 choices may look like. The ODP would like everyone to believe they are a "big tent" party. However, their successful efforts to silence even the Pride Caucus—even in cases where we are simply begging our candidates not to trade on our lives for perceived electoral advantage—has proven otherwise. The tent hasn't gotten any bigger; it has simply shifted, leaving many trans individuals, progressives, and allies out in the rain.

I will continue to advocate, organize, and fight for our community with everything I have. But I can no longer compromise my own moral principles by remaining part of a caucus that appears more interested in party approval than in true, defiant advocacy.

Sincerely,
Arienne Childrey

I can't help but feel like I tried really hard last election cycle to help a lot of people, including cattle farmers, even when they were gleeful in trying to hurt me. I don't have any faith that such empathy extends both ways, nor will they learn anything from touching the stove this time.

My wife's parents similarly voted for Trump. My response to this incredulous take - "he's going to kill us.". I didn't know which of us. I did expect there were going to be interment camps. I do not understand how so many people were so easily swindled, but they should maybe never vote again.

@repmarcykaptur.bsky.social is an insincere, opportunistic fraud. Five years ago she was posting about TDoV. Yesterday she released two of the most vicious anti-trans ads of any DINO in the country. No character, no principles.

I honestly love for him that he has to be carted into work well past the time when he was able. I have as much compassion towards him as he has shown to others in voting down social safety nets. This is exactly the outcome Mitch and other Republicans have forced onto others.

So like, what's the point of them being stupid here? There isn't a Big Measles they can be grifting for. They could lie for the love of the game, sure. But precedent is there is some self-serving end goal. Just trying to kill people to reduce population to wreck the economy?

The rights rollbacks that have already happened will harm or kill most trans youth of this generation. Delayed transition, lack of social support, and criminalization of identity is that important. If the election is between Zyklon-B and Lethal Injection, no, it doesn't matter who is elected.

I for one feel like the Trump family deserves the benefit of the doubt here because they have always had US interests at heart, held foreign adversaries at arms length, been above reproach in their financial and moral dealings, and never baselessly accused political opponents of similar misconduct.

I was just drinking water, exhausted, and was completely unprepared for a political conversation, especially where I might be outnumbered in a group of middle aged white ladies. The other two though were on it. "You should get your news from more sources", and, "You can't really believe that" 2/n

Same story of how I gave up the pro tennis dream. I played against someone that went on to win 2x D1 National championship, and a small number of pro appearances. I was good, but it was unmistakable that there was a whole other level that I'd never reach no matter what I did.

Normally I'd say making fun of how a politician looks is dirty pool, and less interesting than tearing apart their policies and views. When this walking nutsack starts attacking others though, his glass house is getting the metaphorical brick.

I strongly feel that Dem PACs need to target this feeling, hard. "Did you get screwed last election? Didn't see it coming? We did. Maybe vote for the candidates that want to help everyone this time. Otherwise they'll keep hurting you at the pump, the grocery, with tariffs & taking your tax dollars"

When differences in politics were, "I think we should fund more defence and less education", this wasn't a big deal. Politics now are, "I don't think black people should have representation" and "let's throw people into foreign gulags", so all Trump supporters are seen as monsters. Because they are.
