When/if the repairs and the surface level lane reconfig finally happen, I believe the viaduct will become one of the Philly's most dramatic examples of transformation from liability to asset.

Really hope so. I don't know where things stand with CSX and the viaduct repair. I started working on that building in 2019, when we still thought the viaduct would see major improvements in the short term. It's such a drag on the quality of life.

This is awesome news! I headed up the mixed use conversion of this very building, 2501 Oakford, when I was at Stanev Potts Architects. The developers, including Ed, Chris, and Matt (mentioned in the article) had a great vision, and the filling of the commercial space is the final piece.

After a 2014 collapse that killed Albert Suh and injured 2 others, Philly instituted new inspection requirements for fire escapes. I assisted structural engineers on some field inspections. The deterioration I saw was eye-opening. I know there's romanticism about them, but geez they are scary.

Fire escapes need to be rigorously maintained and inspected or else they become life safety hazards themselves. There's a reason the building code no longer allows them. Completely exposed to the elements, they are way too prone to corrosion and facade attachment failure.

I just witnessed a guy jump down onto the Broad street line tracks at City Hall to grab a cigarette butt seconds before a train rolled in. He hopped out, so no tragedy, but I was shocked. Platform doors, we need them yesterday.

Seems like a small detail but it's actually a huge improvement to have this stadium directly adjacent to the subway entrances. Currently the Phillies have crossing guards hold up hundreds of pedestrians from the subway to let a handful of drivers into the parking lots between the station and CBP.

He's wrangling with salty commenters in that thread too. I think he's more effective than I would ever be, since the camera complainers aren't used to getting scolded from the right. He's outflanked them with a "rule of law" argument.

A comment by Stu Bykofsky from his facebook page saying the following:

"PPA has made it a lot easier to contest tickets. One of the commenters here did so and won.
Is it “fair” that you get ticketed for momentarily stopping in a no stopping zone?
Yes. Do you know what NO STOPPING means?
I live on a stupid bike lane. I ALWAYS have my ride pick me up across the street because I don’t them to risk a ticket that I think is $140.
My mantra: Obey the law.
Don’t whine when you don’t and get caught."

Yes. Somehow it feels like it's improved from the worst we saw during the COVID years, but still way too common to see people out there with obviously illegal license plate situations.
020
Ryan Lohbauer @ryanlohbauer.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
But the city must pair this with zero tolerance for fake or obscured license plates. Lots of work to do there still.

I live a block from south broad and whether I'm driving or walking I can feel the improvement. It's gotten safer, calmer, and generally more quiet. It's been awesome for the neighborhood.

Vehicle design has gone well into negligent territory. If Americans really want to buy machines like this, strict liability insurance should be required for the life of the vehicle. So even if the car is stolen, the buyers and automakers can't escape liability. www.inquirer.com/news/philade...

One of the core, beautiful ideas in the concept of America: You are free to tell anyone, no matter how powerful, no matter how sacred, to fuck off. What's more patriotic than a stadium full of my fellow Philadelphians carrying on that grand tradition by booing just about anyone and their grandmom?

Ryan Lohbauer @ryanlohbauer.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Looking at this map, NJT should study adding a stop at North Philadelphia to the Atlantic City Line. The connection with the Broad Street Line would shorten trips for quite a few Philadelphians.

One of the few good examples of boiling frog theory: The massive bloat in vehicle size over the last 40 years. This 1986 Pontiac Grand Am (which were common cars growing up and I never thought of as a compact or small in any way) looked ridiculously tiny in the Acme parking lot today.

100%. Lots of restaurants did a great job using the street space effectively for dining. Also, having it on a Tuesday evening somehow made it more relaxed. Felt like mostly locals just decompressing after work. The weekend West Walnut events are more of a festival flavor.

I recently started using my old Strida as part of a Regional Rail commute. Folding bikes and transit are like a super cheat code, shaving minutes off a commute time and expanding the reachable radius around transit locations. Would make a great youtube video.

Catherine O’Hara was a comedy giant. Lots of 70s and 80s comedy has aged terribly. But S.C.T.V. and especially her performances are still so good and so hilarious.
