I'm not saying I'm old and cranky but I was just offered a seat in the balcony at the muppets show.

Being a caribou is not easy. They suffer pretty badly mid-summer when clouds of mosquitoes, black flies, and other biting flies and parasites harass them endlessly. Late summer and fall comes as a welcome relief.

I upgraded my home wifi with the Eero system. It worked pretty good but got one more unit and hardwired it to my desktop in my office and wowza what a difference.

Wapusk National Park turned 30 years old this year. I'm so old that I worked in the area BEFORE the park was established. This is my old friend Dr. Jim Roth from my first trip in 1994. We used 4-wheelers before the park was established.

Teaching hack. Cherry pick the very best student feedback and bask in it. Ryan Brook is a fantastic instructor. His knowledge of all things Wapusk is extensive, current, and he delivers it in a way that is both engaging and relevant. The amount of effort he puts into this course is incredible.

Water levels were incredibly high this year in Wapusk National Park. It rained almost every day in August. During fieldwork I would take 11C and overcast over 26C and smokey like it was last year.

Has anyone used the rockie talky radios? Wondering what the real experience is with range and durability. They look good but I need ideally 5 miles of range on the tundra. One person can go up on the roof of camp and that will presumably increase the range quite a bit.

During the three weeks we were working on the Hudson Bay coast we lost 2.5 hours of daylight from start to finish, dropping 6 minutes every day.

The Northern Store in Churchil, Manitoba has come a long way and now has very high quality vegetables but the prices are pretty outrageous. This veggie tray was $35.99.

My four season four person tents are getting destroyed quickly during my field course. Any suggestions for a bomb proof tents ⛺️ ⛺️ ⛺️ that can survive hard winds? I can’t afford new tents every three years.

I've spent all of August in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, the largest wetland in North America. It stores about 30 billion tonnes of carbon! It is largely intact and I hope it we keep it that way. @queenofpeat.bsky.social

Hiking from Nester One field camp to Cape Churchill and back in one day is an 8am to 8pm 30km jaunt. We saw 10 polar bears and had one follow us for half an hour. The tower was put up by the Canadian Wildlife Service in the 1970’s to study polar bears and it is still standing.

We found some interesting digging in Wapusk National Park today. Is it polar bear, grizzly bear, black bear, or wolf?

Some years at Nester One camp in Wapusk National Park we get a 'camp bear' that hangs out for days quite close but we don't do anything about it as long as they behave nicely. This one has been with us for 3 days. The camp has a high and very strong fence to keep the bears out and it works very well

So many caribou walked by one of our trail cameras on the Hudson Bay coast it is almost impossible to count them all. It is interesting how the groups include calves of the year, cows, young males, and even big mature bulls as well.

Caribou suffer terribly in the heat of summer when the mosquitos and black flies come out in the heat. We are getting more and more hot days due to climate change.

I once thought Carney was the smartest guy in the room (admittedly thought that about Musk at one point). It is beyond frustrating that the extreme fires and smoke in Canada on their own can’t generate a legitimate climate change response for Canada.
