Looking back, I think my relationship with films, books, TV and music improved as my relationship with neurodivergence improved, especially possibly having AuDHD. It meant living in the real world, and having less time for them as I get older, but it means I cherish them all the more.

"Illustration isn't art." Seriously though, The Sand Horse was one of the most haunting books I ever read when I was very little, and the gorgeous illustrations are a core reason why.

The Descent Up until lockdown, this was a movie I refused to watch! Monsters screaming in your face in an enclosed echoey cave? Nah! And I don't think it's a coincidence that my beard started turning grey when I did get to it!

And now, some of Coyote vs ACME's imagery and commentary feels resonant of the 2008 financial crisis, and it's disturbing how little it's aged. James Gunn and Jeremy Slater began developing the story in 2015 which is close enough to the crash for it to have some influence, even unintentionally.

The Wright Way, a Ben Elton sitcom from 2013 about health and safety inspectors (yes, really) that somehow managed to take all the things that made Elton's work on the police sitcom, The Thin Blue Line divisive (a show I just find okay), and did them worse!

It's just occurred to me that even if Coyote vs ACME never mentions or intended it, Wyle E. Coyote's history as the overconfident but bumbling villain of his cartoon shorts inherently lends itself to the relevant issue of "perfect victim" sentiment.

Twister might actually be one of the most accurate depictions of AuDHD, bordering on a case study, before neurodivergent depictions in media were more widely intentional and explicit, especially the love triangle as a cautionary tale about masking as a harmful foundation for relationships.

I definitely liked the Speak No Evil remake better, and it's for this reason, in the original, the only ND coded characters were the children, and they figuratively and literally had no say in the matter. Here, they're still ND coded, but they have actual more-than-the-bare-minimum agency! (1/2)

Something about Scott's blowup on TV in X-Men 97 speaks to me as an autistic; it's hard enough to explain your choices and emotions, but in a world that seemingly knows better, it soon becomes clear that your accommodation, what's fair, what's rude and polite, it's still as conditional as before.

The fact that Coyote vs ACME is considered "indie" now, even by the term's loose definition today, feels like the perfect metaphor for how things that seemed like no-brainers for successful filmmaking and storytelling, for ANY type of movie, hell, any medium, for adults or children, feel fringe now!

Just about to book my ticket for Backrooms. Up front, outside of the teaser, I'm going in blind, I'm not familiar with the creepypasta, and I don't know if it's an "I'm old" thing, an "outside my autism range" thing or both, but I don't even know what a creepypasta is.

The premise of the SWAT Kats revival comic; villains subjugating the system through control of technology, and our neurodivergent heroes have to contend with getting older, and their lifetime of minimum wage work and ambitious side-hustling coming to nothing! Everything's a millennial metaphor now!

Madkat from SWAT Kats, a British comedian possessed by a ghost jester lashing out at people who don't find him funny. On a rewatch, I wasn't even TRYING to make connections to Ricky Gervais or Russell Brand, but Roddy McDowell's vocal choices feel eerily prophetic! He even says "You're cancelled!"

My take on the Ted Turner/SWAT Kats thing is "both things are true," the executives misconstrued his stance on IMITABLE violence and their incompetent network/merchandise meddling got it cancelled, but Turner should've read the room given how reactionary the issue of media violence has always been!

Journey to Jo'burg, one of my favourite books from when I was about 10 or 11, it was such an emotionally intense read about poverty, racism, and systemic violence in the apartheid years of South Africa, I'm surprised I finished it at that age. I consider it required reading.

I used to find Barton Fink and Inside Llewyn Davis self-indulgent and judgemental of struggling artists. Watching Blue Moon after seeing the extent of Gamergate's societal influence, I now see the Coens and Linklater self-conceptualising as the failed artist to be both therapeutic and empathetic.

The problem people have with "hopecore" seems less about it being a thing, more over the unconscious need for the capitalist status quo to validate it, because that needs is why every radical empathy-based counterculture movement since the 60s become dying trends faster than they get popular. (1/2)

What makes Moses running away in The Prince of Egypt so devastating is Rameses genuinely wants to help, but when you realise or experience something inherently wrong with your upbringing, talking can't solve it. It's not that you can't explain it, it's that they fundamentally WON'T UNDERSTAND IT!
