Is there a Kalshi market on that law? I may want to bet on the "preempted" side.

Tips not being part of the denominator but interchange on tips being in the numerator could easily add half a percentage point or more, right?

I was curious if the first quarter gets more closures generally, but I found the original chart hard to read. The answer seems to be "No".

Her debit charges depends on if she pays a flat rate for all cards or a spread over interchange. Debit interchange for non-Durbin exempt financial institutions (read: medium and large banks that hold most deposits) is capped at I think 21¢ and 5bps. Only thing I have to say about skimming cash:

Note that it's 4% of all revenue, not 4% of credit card revenue or card revenue in general.

If she really has a lot of small tickets, she should (eventually) probably be trying to negotiate an interchange plus deal with a low single cent fixed fee and not using the off the shelf pricing from Square/Toast/whatever, right?

Well, you're eventually paying SET and income tax anyway, but why would you forego QBI if you can get it?
100
Ryan Hassett @ryanhassett.bsky.social · 17h
If actually putting yourself on payroll, almost definitely not! If you just report the business's income as pass through income on your own return, you can take the QBI deduction, effectively making 20% of the income untaxed right off the top. Can't do that as W2! And you pay UI premiums on payroll!

I'm sure the owner is working very hard, and I'm sure it's not a lot on a per hour basis, but the owner is clearing almost $120k on an annualized basis. Is it worth continuing? Maybe, maybe not! (Probably not!) But it's not really the same as an owner who is barely staying afloat.

What's also remarkable is having a 0.13% profit margin... but only after paying yourself 14.63%?

4% interchange is high, but this claim is 4% of all revenue, including cash, check and non-Durbin exempt debit, goes to card processing, meaning the rate they're paying on credit transactions must be 5% or more, which would be extraordinary.

I'm not sure how much of an outlier this is. Fitting out airport retail always commands a pretty substantial premium, and the spaces are generally smaller, so it looks even worse per square foot.

Amazon is the most incredible retailer in the world. It's displaced countless incumbents, turned a cost centre into the dominant cloud computing platform, taken over a movie studio and begun to launch a constellation of satellites. It is also incapable of not packing bananas on top of bread.

You think Lourenco Goncalves has Trump buyer's remorse now that he has to layoff Canadian steelworkers? No. Goncalves knew exactly what he was buying. He is fully bought in on US protectionism and is willing to say and do whatever it takes to reap the rewards of having no foreign competition.

Cleveland-Cliffs CEO blasts ‘evil’ Japan, home of rival Nippon Steel: ‘You did not learn anything since 1945’
There’s renewed uncertainty over U.S. Steel’s future after President Biden decided to block Nippon Steel’s acquisition bid, worth over $14 billion, citing national security.

Standards are strange creatures that once they exist in written form tend to live their own life completely disconnected from the realities that created them, which leads to them being often misunderstood and misapplied

All of a sudden, after the Stonewall riots, jurisdictions were quick to decriminalize same-sex conduct, such as Canada, which had the foresight to do so the month before, and England and Wales, where Parliament was inspired by Stonewall to do so two years prior to the riots occuring.

Lots of people replying with "hahaha FAFO you got what you voted for!" when the employees being laid off did not get what they voted for because Canadians do not get to vote in US elections. The CEO and owners did get what they voted for: massive tarifs that pad the bottom line for their US plants.

Consumers aren't paying the marginal cost of service either way, so if it did happen, it would have to be done by showing political constituencies that if you give the agency more money, it will actually be worth it and not go into a black hole.

My providers don't even pretend to charge the rates in their agreement. They bill wildly inflated rates off some chargemaster, and my insurance plan's administrator adjusts them to the agreed upon rate. eg, "Submitted: $3000", "Plan pays: $185", "You pay: $15", "Plan discount: $2800".

I bet the traffic commute index is killing NY and LA, given that both have fantastic healthcare, the former is famously safe by US standards and the latter has one of the best climates in the country. Alternatively, these indexes are all BS.

A lot of that was apparently CN letting the tracks to degrade when service was suspended during the pandemic. Large stretches were reduced to 10mph in summer. Amtrak ended up using US taxpayer money to pay CN to fix its tracks in Québec.

There's a US customs facility in the new Niagara Falls NY station. IIRC CBSA is on the train at the Niagara Falls ON station.

Niagara Falls ON/Niagara Falls NY and Windsor ON/Detroit MI are too close together to allow for this; the bigger issue is that Americans won't want to clear customs twice for a domestic journey at all. (Never mind the hassles it introduces with moving, eg, recent purchases, alcohol or food.)

With or without a Detroit preclearance facility, you would still be clearing customs twice under that scenario.
