I got locked into this because I booked with @alaskaairlines.bsky.social and this is the flight they put you on from Seattle. You get tied to Qantas. I do it to maintain status but my status didn't mean jack after 5 delays on 1 flight ... And counting. Still haven't left yet. Still in LA.

Update: they put me on a new flight with United, but didn't transfer the credit, so I had a paper reservation that wasn't real. Made it to United, they told me I'm not allowed on, flight left without me. I'm now stranded in LAX like Tom Hanks in that movie. Sully?

Qantas cancelled my flight and split the seats I had with my wife. Instead of being together with extended legroom, we are rebooked in middle seats, on opposite sides of the plane, 2 days later. I think I'm done with them. I do this flight yearly and there's better airlines than this.

There's so many books to read and films to watch, it's very rare that I go back and repeat something ... But Lonesome Dove is utterly amazing. I've re-read it twice now. Combined with Streets of Loredo it's an impeccable journey. I can't recommend it enough.

11/ All in all, a great day presiding over the rats. We all had a lot of fun and thankfully it was overcast. I was wearing a mountain of fur and would have died of heat exhaustion in direct sun. And some good data for V2 of the plague game next year - Lighter costume, better rules, more buttons.

10/ Not sure how many got spread but people really LOVED the buttons. Whenever anyone saw us handing them out they'd ask for one. And looking at the website, over 30 entries on 100 cards isn't too bad.

8/ C) Once we got into the swing of things people couldn't find me again. A few tracked me down and yelled "RAT KING! I spread the plague!" across a walkway, which was funny, but mostly I'd hand someone two or three cards and never see them again.

7/ B) Cell reception in the middle of a Ren Faire is nonexistent. A lot of folks couldn't scan the code there. We got a big spike in entries after the Faire ended though. I'm assuming people found the card in a pocket at home or in a bag once they had better cell service.

6/ A few things I didn't account for: A) Way more people there than I expected, and everyone is moving. So explaining a multi-step game to someone mid-stroll is hard. At first we just handed out single plague cards in passing without getting into the meat of the game.

5/ So I built the cards and the site. A talented artist friend @jovishark.bsky.social designed the buttons. Started the day with about 100 cards and 50 buttons. (Note: Laura ended up handing out the most obviously because she's more outgoing than the rest of us combined)

4/ The rules were supposed to be: - I hand you a few plague cards - You pass them all on to other people - Then you find me again walking around after you've given them all out - I give you a cute button declaring you a member of the "Court of the Rat" as reward for spreading disease.

2/ We decided to go with about a 2 week notice and I knew Clementine and I were going as rats. I'd seen rat costumes at Faires before, so I figured I'd be the Rat King and Clem and her friend could be my tiny rat underlings plus @stringerplz.bsky.social was coming to proselytize as our Rat Priest.
