I don’t think Whedon quite had a handle on Cap in the first Avengers, but by this time he certainly did. Probably helped to have Winter Soldier in between.

I had such an incredible time making this podcast, thank you so much to Rob Kelly for having me on. We had a thorough rake through the life and work of Nick Ray, culminating in the swan song that is Lightning Over Water, the remarkable pseudodocumentary he made with Wim Wenders about his own death.

You know I really think we need to update the old "if everyone else you know jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?" saying to something a little more relevant to our lives. "If everyone else you know pushed people off a cliff, would you do it too?" Or indeed standby and just watch it happen?

Bring It on Home to Me (Live at the Harlem Square Club, Miami, FL - January 1963)

That might be apocryphal, but I happen to agree with it, so I believe he said it. It’s also alleged that Sam’s dying words were, “Lady, you shot me.” I choose to believe that, too.

The album is one of the greatest live concert recordings of all time; it’s certainly my favorite. The high point is “Bring it On Home to Me”. Allegedly, Sam said this was the best, most pure version of the song he had written; this is the way the song was supposed to be heard.

The executives thought it would terrify the whites and damage his standing in mainstream pop music, so they didn’t release it until more than twenty years after he died.

Sam was the King of Soul, the biggest crossover success up to that point. But this live performance, this was Sam singing to a black audience. His people. It was wild, rambunctious, sexual, unchecked.

RCA recorded Sam Cooke: Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963, but they didn’t get the performance they were expecting, and promptly shoved the tape in a drawer with no intention of releasing it to the masses.

The live version that Sam recorded, though, that’s all him. That’s the essence of Sam. It’s raw and it’s strained and it’s yearning and it’s perfect.

On any other occasion, Sam’s 1962 release of “Bring it On Home to Me” would be my favorite song of all time. It’s beautiful. Lou Rawls’ voice adds some muscularity to Sam’s vocals, but very nearly overshadow them. It doesn’t quite sound like Sam singing, and that’s the only flaw with the track.

Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, the Commitments, and Mandy Moore all tackled it. Even the Dixie Chicks did a sweet a cappella rendition. The best version, by a mile, is Sam Cooke’s, and not just because it’s the original, because I’m not talking about the original.

And if I permitted myself to include duplicates, this list might feature four or five versions of “Bring it On Home to Me”. The Animals and the Supremes both covered it in 1965 just months after Sam Cooke’s death. Van Morrison has an amazing version of the song.

Songs make me a kid again, playing Little League and catching lightning bugs on a summer night. Songs make me forget about the harry blob I see in the mirror. Songs rejuvenate me. If music is my church, then this list is my Book of Psalms.

Songs that Jack Black described in High Fidelity as “old sad bastard music” can take me to a smoke-filled diner, where I’m forced to watch through a rain-splattered window the girl I thought was perfect get into another guy’s car.

Songs make me feel romantic, depressed, happy, angry, horny, and nostalgic. Songs with strong socio-political statements like protest rock or hip-hop make me want to get in someone’s face and argue.

Nothing, however, provokes a more immediate emotional response than the song on the radio—or streaming service.

1. “Bring it On Home to Me” by Sam Cooke More than any other art form, music has the most emotional influence on me. Great movies and TV can keep me entertained, can quench my thirst for narrative drama and character. Likewise fiction and poetry, which tap into my oft-neglected critical nature.

In fact, I love this song so much I almost included a French rap version of it on my list of 45 songs. I love Yannick’s version almost as much as the original, but I decided it was too close to my rule of not repeating bands/artists/songs on the list in order to spread the wealth.

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) (Official Music Video)

Are the two different bridges with different singers and melodies? Or is the second bridge sung by the bassist a pre-chorus? Isn’t the chorus just the line “Oh what a night” that begins each verse? I don’t know enough about songwriting to understand but it’s goddamn unusual, and I adore it.

Ryan Daly @ryandaly.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
“December, 1963 (Oh What a Night)” is an awesome song. It’s also very weird, structurally speaking. The verses are sung by the drummer. The group’s star, Frankie Valli just sings the chorus… or is it the bridge? His part sure doesn’t sound like a chorus; it’s not the ear-candy singalong part.
100
Ryan Daly @ryandaly.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Anyway, what was the point of this? Oh yeah, in my movie, the love theme for the vampire and werewolf would be the Four Seasons’ “Oh What a Night”. Because they’re both creatures of the night, get it? And because disco was back in vogue then.

Alas, the system bypassed me entirely, and that’s why I’m not a Hollywood writer today. (I won’t even tell you about how Captain America: Civil War ripped off my idea for a Batman vs. Superman movie.)

Ryan Daly @ryandaly.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
See, Underworld ripped off the roleplaying game instead of ripping off me, who ripped off the TV show based on the game. Underworld went to the source, and I, as middleman, got screwed. The movie should ripped off my idea that ripped off the game; that way I could’ve been part of a legal quagmire.

Ryan Daly @ryandaly.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
There ended up being a legal dispute between the filmmakers and White Wolf, the publishing company behind Vampire: the Masquerade. It was extremely disheartening.

A few years later still, and Angela shows me this movie, Underworld, and damn if it didn’t include the same ideas as my story.
