Iowa gets steel, Appalachia gets the shaft
Last week, President Trump announced that America is getting back in the steel business. Not in Pittsburgh or Allentown, where steel is encoded into their DNA, but in Iowa.

Appalachia & in partnership with our neighbors, Black in Appalachia has purchased the old Epsom Springs Hotel here in Whitesburg. This railroad hotel was built in 1872 and is the one of the last remaining piece of our historic business district.

There's a great amount of work to do, but the opportunities for a regional museum & community space are even greater! Join us on this journey to foster a new home for Appalachian stories.

Indigenous Foodways – The Monacan
This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize the Monacan people, whose ancestral homelands include Virginia’s Piedmont and Blue Ridge. Monacan foodways drew on both gardens and forests: corn, beans, squash, and sunflowers, alongside hunted game and gathered nuts and fruits. This is a story of deep knowledge of place—and of a living Monacan community that remains connected to its homeland. Citizens of the Nation are descended from Virginia and North Carolina Eastern Siouan cultural and linguistic groups, and our ancestral territory includes Virginia west of the fall line of the rivers, sections of southeastern West Virginia, and portions of northern North Carolina. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Monacan #AppalachianFoodways #IndigenousFoodways #VirginiaHistory
