Talarico: No, my position is exactly the same. The reason I opposed that bill is because it was a blanket statewide ban without any appreciation for nuance. I support an amendment to that bill to allow local officials, local education officials, local sports officials, to decide on an athlete-by-athlete, sport-by-sport basis if there’s safety and fairness. That has always been my north star, and it’s going to continue to be my north star. I’m also always going to stand up to politicians who bully students, who bully kids to score political points. My faith teaches me that every child is made in the image of God, and so I am always going to push back against efforts to grandstand when it comes to our students. And I’ll always fight to make sure that our student-athletes and every sport is safe and fair. Those are not mutually exclusive goals. That’s exactly what I did at State House; that’s exactly my position now. It’ll be my position in the U.S. Senate.

Talarico: And I was talking about T-ball, and it’s true. When you’re talking about elementary school sports, any educator will tell you perfectly fair competition in elementary school is not the name of the game. At that age, the goal is to teach T-ball. It’s to teach kids how to work together, how to have fun. Now, when you get to varsity baseball, when you get to college sports, then competition is clearly more important because you’ve got scholarships on the line.
