I made a proof of concept to port WolfEngine to iPhone. It's cool to see what modern phones can do. Just run desktop-class renderers with all the graphical bells and whistles enabled. At 30FPS. But I'm not sure it'll be more than a novelty any time soon. Maybe in five years this is normal, though

My focus on CPU performance in WolfEngine is paying off. A thousand little guys, without any special optimization on the gameplay side of things. Animations are skeletal, and units are simply instantiated from a prefab. Assets and animations: Toony Tiny RTS Set by Polygon Blacksmith.

I started a habit of keeping WolfEngine's bug count very low by clearing every known bug off the list. This process, of course, caused me to know more bugs which are also now fixed. Now it's time to create more bugs 🙂

Terrain painting is simple and quick to access. Cliffs are automatically painted based on slope angle. Supports up to 255 layers. Work-in-progress, but feels very nice to work with when you're used to Unity's tooling :)

Got my engine to run on Windows again (though ray tracing remains Metal-exclusive for now). Meanwhile, working on terrain, physics, vehicles... Lots of stuff. No focus, but it's a lot of fun 😂

The latest engine feature I've been working on is real-time global illumination using DDGI probes. A proven solution that isn't as detailed as something like Unreal's Lumen, but runs faster and appears to be more stable.

For the past seven months I've been working on a game engine on the side. Introducing WolfEngine. Written in C# / .NET 10, and aiming to make the most of modern GPU's supporting DirectX12.2 or Metal 3. Also integrates Jolt physics, a vehicle SDK, and a WIP terrain system.

It's pretty easy when you know color theory.

It's very optimized, but only for spherical rats in a vacuum.

Learned DX12 and Metal and started building an engine as a side project as I work towards shipping the Unity game.

Dialogue:
I’d be willing to make this ship your very own for a bit. That’s a fair exchange! Am I right, Mario?

-> That’s right
-> Yes

As if GTA’s ever-changing release dates weren’t enough, the industry can now live in fear of Elder Scrolls appearing out of nowhere.
“I like to just announce stuff and release it,” he explained. “My perfect version – and I’m not saying this is going to happen – is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear.”

Asked if he wanted Bethesda to shadow-drop The Elder Scrolls 6 like it did with Oblivion Remastered, he replied: “You might say that was a test run. It worked out well.”

Same. It's pretty transparent with why it recommends games to you and it's not *that* personal. But for developers this is a blessing. Steam is vastly more successful at getting users interested in a variety of games than, say, Playstation is.
Is this game relevant to you?
✅ User reviews: Overwhelmingly Positive

I enjoy looking back on how far I've progressed. It makes the rest of the journey seem less daunting.
Just make it exist first - a picture showing my first iteration of the town of Tristone.

You can make it good later - showing the current version.

The new Fable looks... It's not ugly but it's just kinda boring and neutral. Especially in terms of lighting and tonemapping this scene needs more *warmth*. Pre-release footage of course. Fingers crossed.

And during that same year we had Fable II, Prince of Persia and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (which tbh looks quite bland). Just to give a pick of AAA projects on the same consoles.

Games may have been heavily tonemapped but even among the brown games (which were far from the only options) there were some very different styles.

I think it’s even more useful for stylized games because you can have more definition in the lighting vs using detailed textures. Depends on the style of course. But check out Jusant.

Here's one I did two years ago. Probably in Unity 2023. So much improvement- yet so much left to improve. I hope I can share my current work soon.

I found my first 3D landscape. I've always loved making these. This was all the way back in Unity 3.
My first landscape rendered in Unity 3. Standing in a meadow in the mountains. A windmill and some trees can be seen with mountains in the background.
The image has harsh contrasts, and shows little regard for color or composition.

Show me four GAMES that influenced YOUR current game project
Skyrim, for its brilliant open world design and progression system.
As well as Oblivion, for its three/four-act sidequest design that always tries to subvert expectations. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, for its simple yet satisfying combat systemDragon Quest XI, for its striking visual designThe Bloodline, for some of the movement mechanics and worldbuilding

These are some supposedly real explosions from movies. It seems that once it settles you do mostly see smoke on the outside and fire on the inside.

Using screen-space shadows as a high-distance fallback to shadowmaps. Downsides: - Inaccurate, especially at highly oblique angles - No off-screen elements But it's way better than nothing.

UT2004 held up better in my opinion. It's not nearly as high definition, and the art isn't as good, but the rendering has a clarity to it that makes it somewhat timeless compared to Gears of War's obvious visual artifacts.

Apparently there's a strategy in RoW where you can become extremely powerful by petting dogs. This was a bug, but now that I'm aware of it, it's a hidden feature.

Modified Unity's terrain shader to support up to 16 textures instead of just 8. I am aware that solutions for this exist on the asset store, but none of them support ray tracing. Thankfully, Unity 7 will ship with a brand new terrain system, which hopefully won't have such harsh limits anymore.

Alright. Done with my custom Unity inspector. This should save a lot of quicking and scrolling. Not the prettiest but it works.
