Saturday read #2. Trip folk? 1890s-meet-1990s? Why not? Ahead of a weekend show @ruthhazleton.bsky.social talks us through meeting of minds. "I don’t know it if it was the soundscape or the beats but it evoked this kind of atmosphere that for me was so attractive" www.bernardzuel.net/post/now-is-...

Right/wrong? Bordering on sacrilege or what folk has always done? “I remember panicking towards the end of the album going this is nuts people are going to freak." @ruthhazleton.bsky.social on how traditions can mean many things & the song does not remain the same www.bernardzuel.net/post/now-is-...

The Doctor was right says folk singer/historian/iconoclast @ruthhazleton.bsky.social, rules about genre & history are just wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff. Get songs that get to the meat of our lives, that's "the cultural threads I guess that surpass time.” www.bernardzuel.net/post/now-is-...

It's not that time is irrelevant with @ruthhazleton.bsky.social's gripping new album, it's that it stretches & bends to accommodate stories & sounds that remake your view of folk, & folks. www.bernardzuel.net/post/ruth-ha...

Agnes Sampson, a midwife and healer from North Berwick, was accused in 1590 of raising storms against King James VI’s fleet. Her trial reveals the tangled roots of folklore, politics, and misogyny in Scotland’s witch panic. #FolkloreThursday Image: Unknown author
Woodcut illustration depicting a demonic figure with horns, wings, and a tail standing in the center, surrounded by four women, likely representing witches, who appear to be offering or receiving small dolls or effigies. Above them, three flying creatures with human-like forms and animalistic wings are shown in the sky. The image evokes themes of witchcraft and devil worship, typical of early modern European depictions of witch trials.

If the Albanese government wanted a trade policy retaliation for the Trump tariffs, I’ve got just the thing: local content requirements for American content companies. Force Netflix to carry 25% Australian content for local audiences, or pay a big levy

Have come to the conclusion that grant-writing is essentially a task in being able to reformat templates to answer hideously-worded questions, over-complicate simple project ideas and over-simplify complex creative process. I swore I’d not do this again, but here I am. #independentmusic

Sage advice, though we’re still waiting for Australia’s first confirmed witch bottle, and that becomes less and less likely with the passing of time. Apotropaic markings and concealed shoes, however, we have a wealth of these! #folklore #concealedshoes #witchbottle #Hexafoil

My excellent brilliant partner, Lorana Bartels, writes today that mandatory minimum sentences are bad policy. Applying this bad policy to the real problem of antisemitism and other hate crimes is particularly ironically stupid, as it undermines the rule of law. This shit will only make shit worse.

Mandatory minimum sentencing is proven to be bad policy. It won’t stop hate crimes
Extensive evidence shows the government’s plan to legislate mandatory minimum sentences for hate crimes, including antisemitic acts, won’t be effective. Here’s why.
